How soon does you cognition come back after coming off antipsychotics?

Just wondering as I’m thinking of maybe coming off soon due to the side affects

Is it your 1st time stopping meds? Don’t do it on your own, ask your psychiatrist to stop them and you have to slowly decrease dosage as you will get withdrawal symptoms like severe headaches, etc

I’m going to do it with the doctors supervision yes in a few months time.

Good luck, I stopped meds once with the help of my psychiatrist, I ended up in mental hospital after 1-2 years but I was psychotic during all that time. It was a disaster as I nearly damaged my life permanently.

I hope it works for you.

It didn’t come back for me. It became worse.

Really. Wow that’s not very good I’m sorry to hear that you almost ruined your life. I hope I can lead a normal life their after but I’m not so sure. I will. Hopefully I will

The right antipsychotic would defeat the symptoms and then also help with reversing the brain damage that happens as a result of psychosis ; it’s why I champion abilify/aripiprazole because I think if it works for you, it has a good prognosis effect

If you come off of antipsychotics, if your body’s genetic info hasn’t learned how to cope with the psychosis process, you may well end up worse off I’d say

It would be nice to live without meds but don’t worry my sz was always severe so likely it won’t be the same for you.

I’m sorry to hear that I hope things will get better for you later on as I have heard that schizophrenia can lessen as you get older.

Yeah I suppose so but tbh I dont think I have found the right one yet. I am on abilify. It has gotten rid of my positive symptoms perfectly but not my negative ones and I get alot of side affects.

Yeah the negative ones Imo are the results of brain damage effects that then affect the body.

It takes longer to recover from if it really is like the above I’ve described - with a lot of practice and resilience however, you should be back to A1

Which side effects do you get with abilify?

I get anxiety and impulsivity a lot. And also hormonal fluctuations that obviously make me crave,

Usually antipsychotics improve cognition and make thoughts more organised.

I get impulsivity oculargyric crisis (eyes rolling back) not often occasionally. compulsive shopping forgetfulness I get forgetful really bad and sometimes insomnia. Lack of creativity lack of motivation which for some reason has been getting better recently. I have also been feeling rather depressed but I dont know if that is the disease itself or due the other side affects of the medication

Really. I dont think that has been the case for me I dont know why they affect me so much ?

I don’t know, it might not be the medication and might be elsewhere that’s triggering some of those symptoms,

As above, try to keep at the medication for as long as possible. When you are absolutely CERTAIN you’ve developed stress management in your mind and have tested yourself in situations , then after that it could be worth coming off of

But even so, anything could trigger a relapse and nobody wants that for you,

I’d say read up as much as you can on how medication works, or science (and also psychology) to a level you can grasp how well you can fight psychotic break through symptoms or trigger situations so that you can be medication free

Two facts:
Genetics change in the body as we live
Stress management is a skill that can be developed by resilience (resilience is recently being researched as a means of sz recovery)

All the best
