How many of you were on Ritalin as a child?

I was put on Ritalin young and unfortunately just fueled an unwanted drug addiction!!

How many of you took it and still take a stimulant?

How do you find taking a stimulant nowadays?

Don’t do drugs, friend! Unless you absolutely have to to cope.

Sad to hear that wallafish. Sorry you were put on Ritalin.

My husband recently weaned himself off Ritalin. He’s doing surprisingly well. But I think it’s because he didn’t quit cold turkey.

I started Ritalin in 1989 @ 6 or 7 years old, but it gave me a tic disorder that I have to this day.

From there I tried other drugs that I can not recollect.

Ritalin caused my psychotic break. I kept taking it and taking it until I snapped. Not sure what my end game was, but it really screwed me up in the end.

How do you know Ritalin caused your psychosis?

Because I took copious amounts of it until I snapped. It had been keeping me up for 3 or 4 days. Amphetamines + no sleep = psychosis.

Oh, I see.

I remember kids in high school snorting Ritalin. Were you taking it orally? Snorting it?

Taking it orally. I was more suicidal than looking to get high. I just kept taking it until I started feeling like I was under surveillance. And like people were talking about me on the internet.

Same here. Was put on it at 14, the only thing that happened was that I got tics I still have to this day.

I am prescribed Ritalin for ADD and autism (off-label indication) and have been taking the medication for more than 4 years. As far as costs go, it is available as a generic (methylphenidate) which means it is reasonably priced. There are different formulations available, immediate release and extended release. Ritalin definitely helps me stay awake and improved my academic performance dramatically. My GPA increased over 1 point the year I started taking Ritalin as I was more alert and focused during class. The drug works through the dopamine system (dopamine is responsible for focus, attention, reward and alertness amongst other areas as well). At one point, I became slightly anxious while taking the drug as it does increase your heart rate which led to shortness of breath and an almost panic attack type of reaction for me.

Overall, the medication is effective, cheap, and does not have too many side effects or interactions. My advice would be to simply start at a low dose until you determine how your body adjusts and ask your doctor to increase the dose as needed since tolerance does develop with this type of medication. Also, it is a CII medication which means that it has a higher likelihood of abuse and addiction compared to other drugs in different schedules and will only be prescribed for a 30-day supply with five additional 30-day supplies in most provinces.

I was put on Adderall.
I kinda blame it for why I’m like this now,
It definitely made things worse
I got super hooked on it,
It’s addictive stuff

I was on pretty much every stimulant as a kid including concerta which is the extended release version of Ritalin. I cannot tolerate stimulants anymore. My doctor prescribed 2.5mg Dexedrine tabs and even that I couldn’t tolerate. It makes me anxious and paranoid.

I was on Ritalin when I was 11. Turned me into a zombie at school. Stood by the doors waiting for the bell to ring. Then I moved in with my dad and he took me off of it.
