How long does it take for Latuda to work?

I’ve been on 80mg of Latuda in combination with Fluanxol 60mg (fortnightly) and 100mg of Chlorpromazine for about 4 weeks. The thing is I don’t feel any different with regards to my sz. I still hear voices the same, still have what I am told are delusional thinking, still paranoid.

One pdoc told me you have to try an antipsychotic for a few months before changing it out [because it doesn’t work]; this was my inpatient pdoc who put me on Trilafon. I also take Latuda (120mg), and I’m still having difficulty with psychosis.

Thanks for your reply @stellaglow. I hope my psychosis settles down a bit. I think I’m resigned to the fact I will likely hear voices for life, but I’d like to be less paranoid and have ‘clearer’ thinking. It isn’t nice when something you firmly believe to be true, turns out to be a false belief.

That’s not necessarily true; there are a lot of medications out there that may help
your voices more than what you’re currently on is  I’m struggling with finding the right medication combinations as well, but with time and patience I should find it.
Don’t lose hope…I know the paranoia is terrible :frowning:

We can calculate it, okay, Lurasidone half-life according to Wikipedia is 18hrs. Drugs reach stable concentration after 5 half-lives, so multiply 18 times 5 and you get 90, so 90 hrs is how long before you should feel the side effects of the med. 90 divided by 24 is 3.75 days, so if you don’t feel better after 3 days and 18hrs you should consider talking to the doc about changing meds or upping your dose. Just to be safe I would give it a week, do ya think you could wait that long?

How Long Does It Take For Lurasidone To Work?
It is very important to tell your doctor how you feel things are going during the first few weeks after you start taking lurasidone. It will probably take several weeks to see big enough changes in your symptoms to decide if lurasidone is the right medication for you.

Antipsychotic treatment is generally needed lifelong for persons with schizophrenia. Your doctor can best discuss the duration of treatment you need based on your symptoms and illness.

- Hallucinations, disorganized thinking, and delusions may improve in the first 1-2 weeks
- Sometimes these symptoms do not completely go away
- Motivation and desire to be around other people can take at least 1-2 weeks to improve
- Symptoms continue to get better the longer you take lurasidone
- It may take 2-3 months before you get the full benefit of lurasidone

It must not be working then, because I’ve been on it for 4 weeks without much difference. I guess this means I’m up for a change in meds yet again.

Oh thanks @Moonbeam. I’ll let my pdoc know when I see him at the end of this month. I’ll keep going with it for the meantime and see what advice he has to offer. My motivation has gone backwards since commencing on it, but I feel less depressed if that makes sense.
