How easy is it to get on disability in the US?

I live in Illinois but I’m starting to want to go on federal disability. How do I do it, and do people get turned down?

I think it’s different for everybody. But one thing for sure it’s kind of dragged out.
I applied in May and they sent me a letter with appts to go see their medical doctor and a psychiatrist in September. Then I think they have 45 days after that to decide.
So it will probably be sometime in December or the first of the year before I find out.

I got mine on the first try I know other people who have waited 5 years or more

I’m on my second try and had a hearing. It’s been over a year. But m medical records weren’t complete.

I’m in the process of filing. My application was just submitted last month and they’re reviewing my medical records and stuff. I recommend you get a lawyer for your case - it’ll help you get approved.

You’ll need someone who is GOOD with paperwork to help you out. My mom is an RN and she had difficulty with the medical paperwork they sent.

If you don’t have someone like this to help you get a disability lawyer. Otherwise you’ll likely get denied first try, and end up hiring a lawyer for the second attempt anyway.

It was easy for me to get it, probably because no employer wanted me scaring off his or her customers. I never did really even ask for disability. The first time I applied my case manager filed the paperwork, but I didn’t think she had gone far enough for it to count as an application. Then a few years later I was in a mental hospital in Tennessee and they applied for disability for me, and I got it. I think it was the right decision. If I wasn’t on antipsychotic med’s I could get a job digging ditches. Have some employer put me on the kind of work where I can’t break anything, and I’ll be fine. I’m one of those unfortunate souls that seems to break everything he touches.

My aunt worked for ssa when I applied. She helped do the paperwork, I was approved on the first try.

It is good to get a lawyer if you are initially denied. Unless you can afford it in the first try.

i applied again like 1 month ago i thinki should hear back from them in another month i applied for ssi. hopefully i get it i really need it .

I applied about a month ago. I haven’t heard back from them yet. If you can get a social worker to help you fill them out then you won’t need to pay a lawyer.

If you think you want to get a lawyer, a lot of my chronic illness friends really like Allsup.

Get involuntarily put into the hospital for a long time for acting nutso. They will approve you. Trust me I know.

Back in 1993 I barely had to try to get approved. Of course I had delusions like that I had a sister, did a lot of nutty things while being on a college campus, and on 2 security guard jobs, and was hallucinating 24/7. But I’m sure the real kicker was the cost of the meds, and the fact my parents’ insurance had dropped me. The doctors had to be payed. I also think my parents used a lawyer. How easy was it? One day I went to the hospital to sign some papers which the lady didn’t allow me to try to read (it’s hard to read anything when you are fully psychotic but I suspect they were hiding something.), and without having any further input into the process my parents drove me to the Social Security office where they showed me the bs rules of SSI.
I would suggest to you that you need to be a desperate sole, or lost in space like i was to submit to that crap. Anyway it was kinda like signing my life away at the time because back then you couldn’t even work and the medical assistance that was paid for got more expensive over time which made me not want to use the Ticket to Work to effectively lose my health insurance. What I’m saying is if you are down to your last meal due to medical costs apply for it Otherwise keep the government out of your business as much as you can and stay as free as you can unless you absolutely can’t function like I couldn’t.

I got a lawyer, I’m glad I did. Its a tough time on everyone and the help is worth it.

I got it without needing a lawyer and got approved the very first time. Even so, it took about a year and a half from when I initially applied until I was awarded disability. We ran into a situation where they lost some of our paperwork and we had to get it all back together again, other than that it went smoothly.
