How does alcohol affect APs?

Does it excerbate side-effects, impinge on its effectiveness or cause additional medical problems? No apology of drinking is intended with this post.

Gives me a much worse hangover.

It actually seems to make me a little depressed the following week.

Thats about it

I can count on my one hand the times i had a few beers with my APs. Two beers gives my a total hangover… As big a hangover as 2 six packs did in my pre-diagnosed years.

I did some heavy drinking while I was on Geodon and Seroquel. It was the sickest and weakest I’d ever been. The hangovers weren’t too bad, but the alcohol did make me depressed. God knows what I did to my internal organs. It’s been two years and ten months since I last drank.

I’ve drank for many years on Olanzapine. Without realising it it made me numb, depressed and anxious after a while. I have avoided alcohol now for nearly seven weeks and have had a few breakthrough psychotic symptoms so I think alcohol (being a tranquilliser) masked these (even though they say it makes the AP less effective). But are they psychosis or things I just didn’t want to face. This is the question. I fear alcohol in conjunction with AP has made an ostrich out of me.

Antipsychotics lower the seizure threshold. So does alcohol. So doing both puts you at risk of seizure which can be deadly. It is especially dangerous if you are on clozapine which really is a risk for seizures.

Really. Is this true.

I drink on clozapine, which i thought was actually a muscle relaxant.

Yep. My doctor told me about it. You can look it up.

Only positive results on alcohol.

I’m not on AP’s but I found that since I developed sz I can’t drink to much. I get headaches right away even after one drink. I guess it’s my bodies way of telling me I shouldn’t take it.

When on meds, my doc told me no more than 3 hard drinks a week. Now, with only xanax she said no drinks within 4 hours of a dose, and preferably no more than a drink a day. I had one drink in October, and a drink on Thanksgiving. So I have the option, I have my limits, but that’s me. I was a heavy drinker not on meds in high school.
