Alcohol and AP's questions!

I was wondering how safe AP’s are when drinking alcohol.

I have a rare drink every 2-3 months, but got told by staff at a MH care home that Clozaril and alcohol can result in death. Though I don’t know why? (Something about sleep and the AP or drowsiness).

Though I take Olanzapine/Zyprexa, I’m a little worried but I can get a little drowsy on AP’s and alcohol, but it’s quite hard for me to completely ignore.

Can anyone point me in the direction of some useful information other than abstain from drinking or don’t take your AP on nights you drink!

Thanks!

APs and alcohol both effect the central nervous system and can result in decreased respiratory rates, or respiratory depression for a more accurate phrase. This can indeed lead to death if a serious interaction occurs.

It’s not the answer you wanted, but drinking on APs is dangerous stuff. Listen to your health team and dont drink. Skipping a dose frequently can have bad effects too.

Is alcohol really worth the bad effects?

Do what you want, it’s your choice, but I would listen to what you’ve been told.

I only got told when I enquired about it as a volunteer there…

Its surprising that my old pdoc said it was OK to have a drink, but not to the point I made myself vulnerable…

Do you know any studies on it?

My pdoc in UK told me drinking in moderation is fine.whilst on my ap
I abstain from it nevertheless

I think your right about clozaril and alcohol being a killer…I’ve heard that before.

As for other anti psychotics I couldn’t tell you all I know is I drink moderately about 3 times a week and it does not interact with my AP. (Paliperidone)

I think it MIGHT be able to stop it from being as effective though. But so far I’ve not had that problem.

You’ll probably be okay with one drink maybe two, but we cant know for sure. I might have been a bit overdramatic in my post, but the danger is real.

I won’t do that to you, and that’s not the reason for being of this website.

Sedation+sedation=waking up dead.
