I hope you guys can help me, and of course I am going to talk to my pdoc about it also. The antipsychotic that I am on is Amisulpride and the problem is I always feel hungry because of it and I feel like I can’t eat till I am full cause that will make me fat. Does anyone have the same problem and what do you do to prevent getting fat or obese when you are on antipsychotics?
If you’re hungry all the time I’d ask the doc to switch meds. Clozapine makes me want to eat all the time. I’ve gained 100 pounds on it. But it’s the only med that doesn’t make me stay in bed all day so I can’t switch.
Don’t drink your calories, cut down carbs, eat veggies every meal (fibers make you feel full), exercise, don’t eat till you’re full (stop at 70%-80%), consider intermittent fasting.
I’m on Risperdal Consta, Geodon, Seroquel and Celexa. I’m definitely not hungry all the time on this combo of meds. I eat 3 sensible meals a day with two or three snacks in between. I do include sweets in my diet but keep them to a minimum.
I drink tons and tons of non caloric fluids like coffee without sweeteners, Bubly, diet coke, and plain water.
My partner and I cook at home every day and night and we always include fruit and veggies in our diet. Our meals are always so delicious that we feel like we are eating gourmet everyday. Really!
My partner and I both exercise regularly. She walks on her treadmill. I practice yoga. She works out about 3 times a week. I work out 4 to 5 times a week.
My partner and I both have normal BMI’s and have had for many years.
i eat my 3 meals a day but always small portions and a snack in the afternoon. I gained some weight but i was underweight before i started taking APs. Now my weight is normal and i try to keep it like that.
As for the increased appetite, you’re just going to have to find a way to deal with it. I find snacing on nuts and granola bars thru out the day helps a lot. As long as I know what time im getting food I’m good.
Sometimes you can eat right, exercise, and still end up gaining weight from the meds. So my advice is to first, see if you can try a different med that doesn’t make you gain weight as much. More weight neutral meds are geodon, vraylar, latuda, and caplyta. If none of those work for you, or you can’t switch for some reason, then make peace with being a bigger person and focus on just eating healthy foods, so that even at a bigger size you still have healthy vitals. I got up to 220 lbs, but because I kept a healthy diet, I didn’t have high blood pressure or raised blood sugar. I am now losing weight through no effort, just because my new doctor switched my meds.
If you exercise enough and don’t eat too many calories you’ll lose weight regardless of the meds. The only difference is that you need to work harder on it than most other people.
I’ve been overweight before. The first time was in my early 20’s during dissociative episode. My mom showed me a picture in my late 20’s of me sitting holding my baby niece and I was so fat it was scary. I had no memory of being that fat. Then in my 30’s I gained weight on medication. I was up to 280 lbs or something. I weighed 175 in my mid 20’s. I’m happy now with where I am I have some weight but I feel like I don’t need to lose much. Really just eating the meals my family makes now. I’ve lost weight on adderall but that was when I had psychiatrists who would give me anything (fun stuff).
I’m still on geodon, for now, but I am tapering down while starting my new med… I came off my anxiety med, gabapentin, and that has been helping with weight loss.
Do Intermittent fasting preferably 18 hrs and 6 hrs of eating time. For example eat before 7 PM and then next eating only after next day 1 PM. During fasting time only water. If its getting hard then you can drink milk as breakfast replacement.
