How do I prepare steak?

Mr. Star and I want to get into cooking steak. The problem is, we spent four years cooking strictly vegetarian meals and we know nothing about meat. Steak-lovers of the world, Give me your best advice! What kind is best to buy and practice with? We want something that will taste good, but not so expensive it will make us feel horrible if we ruin it. How should we prepare them? What marinades or seasonings do you like? How long do you need to let them soak or whatever? Grill/pan/oven? What are the rules?

Thanks in advance to everyone.

Medium rare is the only way to go.

I think about 5-10 minutes each side based on how thick the steak is.

Make sure you marinate. This gives the best flavor and ensures even tough bits will be easier to chew and digest. Overnight marinating really helps.

I always think grilled is best if you have a bbq.

It tastes good with a Dale’s schricha combination

Don’t cook all the red out of it.

I cook mine in the pan,

Pretty thick steaks about 5 minutes per side,

Then serve with a good compound butter.

Yeah listen to @GoldenRex I think 10 minutes is overdone. I usually eyeball it.

I always buy New York strips. They are the bomb. Tender, juicy. Don’t need any marinating. Fry in a pan with oil. Place steaks in the pan when the oil is hot. Cook on both sides until the inside is slightly pink. Medium rare is how I like them. When done, season with just salt and pepper to taste. Delicious. Dip in a steak sauce if you so choose. I like Bernaisse sauce.

i use a charcoal grill when I have one…don’t have one now so I pan fry it in browned butter on the stove…get ribeye steaks if you want marbled meat…the fat really adds to the flavor !! or go with new york strips…anyways, I cook my ribeye steaks on low/med heat with the browned butter beneath…gives it a smoky flavor…cook 7 minutes per side for medium…some prefer rare steak but it’s not for me…I like a pink center. good for you for deciding to eat steaks !! tabasco carries a chipotle sauce that is excellent on steaks…good luck.

Ribeyes are so good. I also like porterhouse.

Add oil to the pan.
Let it warm up a bit.
Add steak and let it cook 5 minutes each side.

Voila! Delicious steak!

I know it’s blasphemy to serious cooks but I cook my steak (and chicken, fish and pork) in the microwave. Yep, the microwave. Tastes good to me.

Also faster and less messy than cooking it in a pan with oil and grease spattering all over the place.

When I buy meat I usually shop sales and if something is particularly cheap I buy a couple steaks or roasts and cook some and cut up the rest into individual servings and freeze them. Then I can pull it out anytime I want to for the next week or so.
Lean meats are usually good, stuff like loin or round; there’s less fat.

Tasty, average cost cuts of meat that I like are London Broil or a nice Tri Tip roast.

I seriously doubt microwaving a steak is a good idea…it toughens the meat did you know that? no,in a pan is way better!

It’s just a matter of preference. When I bought a new microwave the instruction booklet told how to cook a steak so it’s a perfectly OK, legitimate way to cook steak or other meat and I’m sure I’m not the only one who does it.

Why are you moving away from vegetarianism, if you don’t mind my asking?

Chef’s would cringe at the way I cook steak, I boil fry it to make it tender

I just use salt pepper and garlic powder and some olive oil. Olive oil first. Then grill 3-5 minutes on each side. Only flip once. Let rest. And enjoy. Getting the rareness right takes practice.
