High prolactin levels from antipsychotics anyone?

My prolactin was tested and it’s very high. I just got my test results back and I see my dr later today. I am worried she will take me off of my meds that keep me functioning. Or at the very least drastically reduce the dosages.

Has anyone here had high prolactin levels? What was your experience and what happened? What did your Dr do?

I don’t remember what prolactin is. I should go Google it…

I am on clozapine and still had breakthrough symptoms so they added Amisulpiride and it probably would have worked but my prolactin levels were too high so they took me off it

You have a good doctor who care about you. The doctors I had, say, live with high prolactin.

Amisulpride increases my prolactin, while Abilify decreases my prolactin. Therefore, my sex drive is not as high as it used to be, but sufficient.

My psych dr didn’t order the test unfortunately. My OBGYN ordered it.

So is your prolactin normal now that you are on abilify? I take Rexulti as part of my meds. I wonder if that lowers prolactin since it is similar to abilify sort of? @angledangle

That really sucks @shellys12 I am sorry they had to take you off the amilsulpride before you really got to try it. Too bad it raised your prolactin so much.

My prolactin is in between, slightly higher than the recommended range, but not as high as Amisulpride usually takes it.

I don’t know about Rexulti. I also want to know if it lowers prolactin, in case if Abilify ever stops working. Then I can mix Amisulpride with Rexulti.

I think (don’t quote me here lol)

Prolactin is a hormone that is from the pituitary gland. At least that’s what I remember from my OBGYN dr appointment. Sorry if that’s misinformation!! @FlyingSwan

A little bit of add-on abilify apparently has this normalizing effect on prolactin, even if it’s not your main AP. I am waiting for some blood results myself to see if I am going to add a little aripirazole.

Ok. Good to know. Thanks!! I appreciate your knowledge on this subject. I feel a little better. Thank you so much.

@flybottle

Ok great to know!! Thank you! I take Rexulti. I wonder if my dr will swap it for abilify. Hmm.

Yes, you could take Abilify, as well as Cabergoline. Cabergoline is a medicine that lowers prolactin, but, unfortunately, psychiatrists are usually not aware of it.

Ironically, it doesn’t work 10 percent of the time (Cabergoline) and I was in the 10 percent. it didn’t lower my prolactin.

I take Paliperidone which is known to raise prolactin levels. I have no sex drive so probably my prolactin levels are high.

I had this with Amisulpride

It was very high, but they did not seem as bothered as I was

Can’t remember the measures they used

But mine was as high as a pregnancy in the third trimester

I am not sure if it is dangerous, the effects on sexual function and lactation are not always considered important by some practictioners.

I looked up this Cabergoline but it seems to be contra-indicated with AP’s, has psychosis as a side effect of high doses apparently

In hospital they told me there is a risk of breast cancer with high prolactin

Yes i had high prolactin on amisulpride, came off it straight away and put on abilify. Then abilify made me obsessive spending so i am now on Clopixol which is a really good med for me, its great and my husband thinks im the best on this one

Yes, there are risks with high prolactin.

That is why, a small risk, of less than 5 percent perhaps: Cabergoline to lower prolactin.

Under xeplion 150 my prolactin was too high with a value of 25 and now with abilify 15 mg by days and 100 mg by days of loxapine my prolactin is very low with just 1.5…abilify is miraculous for prolactin ! for a men i think i read on time that prolaction must to be between 5 and 15.
