Have you taken first generation AP

What difference did you feel between first and second generation AP’s ?

Did you like the first gen ?

Seems kinda risky

First generation APs made me feel a lot sleepier, like a mental block. Aripiprazole doesn’t cause the same kind of mental block as other meds for me

I took one whole pill of Stelazine while in hospital.

I immediately just thought “this is a horse tranquilizer type med!”, so I told them I didn’t want any more. As I was a voluntary patient at that time, they couldn’t force me to have it.

Edit: I also took haldol prn while in hospital . I think that helped keep the lid on, so to speak.

I was on prolixen for 21 years, a first generation AP. It sedated me a lot at first but I tapered down and eventually either got used to the sedation or didn’t notice it anymore. My psychiatrist at the time wanted to lessen the chance of me getting TD so he switched me to resperidone. I really couldn’t tell the difference between the two AP’s, I felt the same. I was on resperidone for about 16 years until about 4 years ago when my doctor switched me to the Invega Sustenna. Again, I don’t feel any different on the Invega then I did on the resperidone.

Yes I have taken Loxapine(a first generation AP) since 2020. It caused Tardive Dyskinesia in my face and left hand. My left hand has been left half paralyzed. I’m finally getting off of the med and have yet to see positive improvement in my TD

I’m really sorry to hear this happened to you ~ thank you for sharing

I’m currently on haloperidol, but back in the 90s i was on loxapine and stelazine, some others. I find first gen APs more sedating than the Cobenfy I’m on, but causing less appetite changes than the Zyprexa did. I like first gens but they can cause more QTc prolongation which I’m prone to.

I became very stiff and started shaking.

Zuklopentixol was the drug! It was great for treating psychosis though.

I’ve only ever taken 2 AP’s and they were both second generation (Abilify and currently Olanzapine)

The very first AP I was prescribed was the first generation antipsychotic Navane.
I was diagnosed with schizophrenia at 20 years old.
I was on a relatively high dose and basically this drug turned me into a robotic zombie.
It also gave me awful EPS or TD where my hand curled up into a claw like formation.
It was awful

Yes flupentixol, tolerated well but had one distressing side effect where my eyes would roll up. I really gave it a chance, tried my best but Cariprazine which am on now works best with zero side effects.

You all have been through a lot. Thanks for sharing. It really helps me.
I respect and appreciate you. :dizzy:

I’ve taken fluphenazine, loxapine, and haldol.

I needed benztropine on them, but it wasn’t a problem.

However, they didn’t help me enough. I was too afraid to leave my home.

The only first gen AP I tried was Haldol. The rest were second generation.
