I resent how much tv I have watched in my lifetime and wonder how much impact on my life it has had.
The slow drip feeding of consumer culture, the barrage of advertisements and how subliminally this constant drip feeding of more, more, more and desire to have it all affects me.
I always have it on, but don’t necessarily watch it, and turn the adverts to mute when I can, but still I can’t help but think of itsa deeper programming.
I like to play and watch ‘countdown’ for measuring my own congintion and enjoy the odd drama but other than that most of it is crap.
I’m sure I would listen to more audio books and read more without it, and listen to more music too. I might even play and make more music too.
Still, it is quite a shift to turn it off and even get rid of it.
Still, I can dl movies and boxsets on the internet.
TV itself, is quite a bore for me and it wastes so much time with no end point.
I no longer watch sport, cooking is tedious as I am a fussy eater with coeliac disease, the competition programmes are boring too. I don’t watch soaps etc.
I do consume media, but I limit the consumption to when I have nothing productive I could be doing. I have a large collection, but it is there in case I want to watch it. I don’t have a need to watch all of it. I refuse to watch commercials in any form and successfully avoid them.
I am less concerned with consumer culture as I age. Most of what I own is what I use frequently. I had a car that I liked but got rid of because it ceased being useful this past year when I changed to a more active and outdoor-ish lifestyle. You can get a kayak into a truck, but not into a sedan.
About the only thing I collect that is not useful are my vintage cameras, and I am even thinning that herd now because it is less of a mess to leave my kid when I kick off.
I did not vote because I would prefer a third option of “use sparingly”.
There is a screen in my travel trailer that I am FINALLY picking up next week. It will be the first thing to get ripped out. The point of of the trailer is to Go Places and Do The Things. It is not to Sit On My Arse.
No screens are allowed in it beyond what I need for my day job because I will be working remotely from wherever.
During the last 8 years I’ve very rarely watched TV. I’ve got Roku and Prime Video and get all kinds of free programming and I always intend to watch TV but if I’m not running errands and going to doctors appointments or not cleaning I spend a lot of my free time surfing this site or YouTube.
I just have basic “free” TV…i watch a few shows but have found my consumption has dropped a lot since i lost internet and access to streaming services. I don’t miss it too much but sometimes there’s nothing on public TV.
I watch tv and like it. But I do limit myself due to running a large family. My youngest does her schoolwork all day in my room so I don’t watch anything until the end of day. Usually when I’m watching tv I’m doing other things like my cross stitch or other hobbies. Tv is relaxing for me and as long as I’m not sitting idle for long I don’t feel guilty about it.
Broadcast TV fails to get my attention most of the time these days. I mostly watch stuff on streaming or Youtube these days. I noticed last night that Freevee has closed down which was news to me.
