I’m supposed to go to school in a couple months, but I’m weighing my other options. There is a gas station close to my apartment and there’s a sign that says they are hiring happy people. My mood is great so I think I could cover the happy part. I just want my cognition and motivation to rise just a tad before I think about work. I’ve worked a cash register at a movie theater before, so that doesn’t seem very hard. Figure out how to give people their lottery tickets and cigarettes, I will be golden. Seems alright to me. Seems like an alright job.
Yes, It’s easy.
How long did it take you to figure out how to do everything at the gas station?
A week if not less. I quit after a couple weeks.
I have but it was before I was sick
I’ve worked at two in my teens. They were full service though so when cars came in I pumped the gas, checked the oil and water and even the transmission fluid and battery water. Also, cleaned all the windows with a squeegee and checked the air in the tires
The hardest part for me was ringing up the sales and operating the cash register. Back in those days, we didn’t have those small ATM gadgets at the cash register like at every grocery store nowadays where you just swipe your credit card or debit card through to pay the bill. if a customer paid with a credit card we had to fill out a slip with the cars license plate number, the total sale, their phone number and have them sign it and run it through a little gadget that makes carbon copies. gave them a copy and kept a copy for ourselves. Come to think of it, my experience at gas stations is nothing like today’s, lol.
Epilogue: The gas at my station was so expensive that on lunch break I would drive three blocks away to a cheaper gas station to fill up my tank. When I started working there, gas was about 50 cents a gallon. This was 1979. Than a gas shortage started and gas shot up to about 70 cents a gallon which everybody thought was outrageous.
But I was just out of high school, and out in the world and though I was shy in high school, I used to enjoy talking to friendly customers at the gas station.
Cool story Nick.
I used to work at a gas station. It was great!! It was a small place but people would steal from me then my boss would accuse me. Really made me mad. Nice job though. Go for it.
Thanks Sheryl I’ll keep that in mind.
I’m working at a gas station right now and I usually work over nights. It’s a fairly easy job and all I have to do is ring the register and take care of customers. I work 6.5 hours everyday 7 days a week and it forces me to get out of the house and be social as well. I still have memory and cognitive issues that are getting better but I usually listen to podcasts and or books while on the job because it gets slow during the night.
I was having a hard time in the beginning because my mind wasn’t getting used to it but I hung in there and it eventually it got better. On top of that it’s only a 5 min drive from the house.
I currently work midnights at a gas station five nights per week. It’s not so bad, the only really difficult part is dealing with occasional drunks and a-holes. Most of the customers are cool, though. I bought a little mini stereo so I play my CDs, and I often get on here. There’s some cleaning and re-stocking to do, but it’s no big deal, like mopping the floor, keeping the counter clean, changing trashes, among other things. Not so bad, might be worth a try. I had the hang of most things within a few days, if that. Some gas stations in my area sell beer, that brings more drunks in of course, but the one I’m at doesn’t sell alcohol.
My opinion is taking an easy-to handle job is more important than going to school. working at a gas station sounds pretty good for me because you will meet different people during the shift which makes your job less boring. I think most of the customers are polite people.
This might be my experience only and not yours but being a cashier was one of the hardest jobs I ever had since being sick. I have a problem with stamina and standing up for hours wears me out. Currently working 8 hours a day seems to wear me out too which is why I went into tutoring. It is only 4-6 hours per day and the pay is not bad since it usually requires a college degree. I also quite like what I do. Nothing wrong with working or going to college, but I think a college degree can get you into some jobs that would allow you to live more comfortably and I don’t think they are necessarily harder to do.
interesting experiences, sounds like it can be a good alternative to janitoring…
I worked at a gas station back before my illness. It was small, soda and engine products was all that they sold. I fixed flat tires too. It was fun but it paid minimum wage.
Feel free to take a chance on it.
I worked at a full service gas station when I was in college in the nineties. I don’t think they even have those anymore. I mostly pumped gas and checked the oil and the air in the tires.
