I have recently discovered that my son has been on 30 mgs of zyprexa a day ( 15 in the morning and 15 at night ) . This is in combo with prozac 20 mgs . I decided to check into the meds he is on to made sure there are no dangerous drug conflicts or mistakes so i did some investigating . I discovered that the max daily dose for zyprexa is 20 mgs day ( 18 mgs day when combined with prozac which he is also on ) . so being over the max i decided to just give him the nighttime dose of 15 mgs zyprexa and discontinue the morning to keep the zyprexa within a safe dosage . has anyone ever experienced taking 30 mgs of zyprexa a day and if so did you develop any long term health problems for taking an over the max dose ? should i take him to the hospital ?

I am on 30 mgs a day, 10 in the morning and 20 at night. Unlike some people taking it, I’ve never gained weight directly from it. It does cause me some constipation sometimes and also when i go to pee. If I’m at home, it can cause me to be a bit sleepy in the morning. Other than that it has been a miracle drug for me. Different drugs do things to different people, so I really can’t recommend anything. I am also on 75 mgs of Effexor a day as well.
I’ve heard of a person being on 35mg of zyprexa a day on another forum. They started off on that dose and once they got out off the hospital the pdoc they were seeing thought the dose was way to high so started tapering the dose.
thanks everyone i did talk to a pharmacist and he said i should bring it up with the doctor and ask why hes on such a high dose but until i see his doctor im going to keep it within a safe dose i wont let him take over 20 a day as that is the max safe dosage but ill let the doctor know that he did that and see if he knows of anything that can help with the overdose maybe a detox or something
I know some PDocs like to give medicines in larger than recommended doses off label.
I’ve heard of 30-35mg of it being given by the “professionals”!
I’m on 15mg and part of my crisis plan is to increase my dosage to 20mg, which is within the max recommended dosage but I’ve never needed this.
I think its ok that doctors can overrule scientific findings on dosages as long as we the consumers have the final decision on the matter and are able to overrule the doctors recommendation and not have to follow those recommendations - also pdocs should make people aware that they are prescribing over the safe dose but i guess consumer beware its important to be educated about anything we put into our bodies food or drugs and decide for ourselves
I was on zyprexa 40 mg a day, 20 mg in the morining 20 mg at night. Worked fine for me. Was the only thing that worked before I started taking Invega sustenna which completely turned off the voices, not so much for the delusions but one battle at a time I guess.
