Haldol. Yay or Nay?

Everyone keeps telling me to get off haldol because its a dangerous med. But i just got a combination of meds that works for me and im afraid to make a change.
Opinions? Ill bring it up to my psychiatrist in three months when I see him next.

I don’t like the first gen antipsychotics because they come with a higher risk of Tardive Dyskinesia

I was on haldol for about a week and the side effects were awful. I had horrible restless leg syndrome and dizziness when standing still. I quit.

However it appears to work well for YOU which is good. You have to weigh your stability vs developing a serious problem that can’t be reversed (TD)

I’m on Lurasidone 40mg and I’m stable but I’ve heard other people on here having bad experiences with it. I developed Akathisia on it which is a movement disorder that was pure torture so now I take trazodone for that which works well and I’m fine.

I’m on lurasidone and haldol. They seem to be working well for me and i haven’t experienced any deleterious side effects from either. They don’t quite work as well as clozapine did but I’m handling the voices and delusional thoughts with therapy (primarily CBT). You have to do what works for you! It seems like you’re doing well on it, so just keep track of any emerging symptoms to discuss with your pdoc.

I’m on haldol, and I like it quite a bit, but it does come with some negative side effects. First of all, I’m tired all the time on it. Secondly, it creates brain fog and lower cognitive efficiencies. And finally, it causes restless leg syndrome pretty severely. I’m on 50mg, augmented with Prozac at 80mg, Geodon at 40mg, and caplyta at 42mg.

Oof I remember a few years ago there were a couple months where my legs were extremely stiff and painful in the mornings. i would soak in epsom salt baths every day. Then it stopped.

Also I was just telling my mom the other day that I missed being on abilify because i was SO clearheaded on that med. Was insane. I felt like a person again. Im afraid ill never feel like that again.

I took Haldol for a year.

The benefits were there were no sexual side effects or weight gain, etc…however, it kind of numbed my brain, like I couldn’t even make a conversation with people, and my social anxiety increased as a result. That was the only side effect if I recall correctly.

I have it as a PRN and only use it when all of the other options are worse. The side-effects are vile just like you described and the fatigue is something else. No energy to do anything but your legs move all over anyhow. There is no way I would consider it as a main med, especially with the TD risk.

Isnt depo a birth control shot?
Thats the only depo ive used before.
And yeah the more i hear about it, the more freaked out im getting. Ive been on haldol about six or seven years and the only bad side effect i got from it was muscle stiffness in my legs in the mornings for about two months. Then it went away.
