I never carry cash on me but one day i had a homeless guy ask me to buy him cigs i didnt at the time but looking back on it i wish i did i totally understand the suffering of nicotine withdrawal so i wish i bought him some
I’ve also given homeless people money and they didn’t seem grateful. It’s irritating but I also don’t give money for the gratitude, so I give anyway. I give because I have extra and they could use it to buy whatever makes them happy even for a little bit.
Well done, i do the same, instead of giving small amounts often, i give a homeless person a bigger amount once in a while. Here in Denmark they sell a magazine about homelessness, but i wont have the paper, so i give them the money without the magazine.
I’m thinking - if they had a choice they wouldn’t beg for money, so they may be worse off than me
This is one if those situations where boundaries are important. Everyone gets to choose how to spend their own money. That means you get to choose if you are comfortable parting with your own, and under what circumstances. If the thing that makes you comfortable parting with the money is “i have extra and this person asked” then cool. If the thing that makes you comfortable is “i want my money to go to a good cause” then, also cool.
But, once the money is given to another person, it now becomes their money. They can spend it how they want from that point. If you don’t feel comfortable with money being spent on drugs/alcohol/whatever, you shouldn’t feel pressured to give it away. There is no guilt in choosing to keep it to spend in other ways. If you do choose to give money to strangers, you have to be prepared to accept that you have no choice in how they spend it.
I never give people money. I live across the street from apartments that are full of drug addicts and alcoholics so when they ask me for money I just say I don’t have any cash which is usually true.
I was driving my car back from the post office and I see this one guy on the side of the road in my hometown holding up a sign asking for money.
I was shocked because we don’t see any homeless people by my house.
I will give money to the homeless with no problems. If they want to snort or drink straight from the bottle rather than eat I say fine. That could very well be me standing in their shoes.
