Guitar theory

Lol at bing AI!

I used it as a reference to learning the CAGED system and it gave me a wrong fret number!

I knEw it sounded bad so i asked it again and it gave me a different number which makes me question using it altogether.

For the A chord in the G postion it told me fret 5 when it is apparently fret 3.

As the C chord in the A postion in is in fret 3 and that also sounds awful, I wodered if that was right too? @StarCrazy

C chords are fret 1 (C), fret 3 (A), fret 7 (G), fret 8 (E) , fret 10 (D)

A chords are Fret 2 (A), Fret 3 (G), Fret 5 (E), Fret 9 (D), Feet 12 (C)

I haven’t learnt these properly yet.

I am also dubious about C chord in the D position on fret 10 because that doesn’t sound too sweet either?

Also if the A chord in the G positon is just an open G then surely the C chord in the A position is just an open A in the 2nd fret? These sound right!

Can anyone help me please?

G chords are so Fret 3 (G), fret 5 (E), Fret 7 (D), Fret 10 (C), Fret 12 (A) not including barres.

E chords are * * Fret 2 (E Shape)

  • Fret 9 (D Shape)
  • Fret 7 (C Shape)
  • Fret 7 (A Shape)
  • Fret 12 (G Shape)"
    According to Bing AI?

D chords are

  • Fret 2 (D Shape)
  • Fret 5 (C Shape)
  • Fret 7 (A Shape)
  • Fret 10 (G Shape)
  • Fret 10 (E Shape)

can anyone affirm these fret numbers for me please?

I don’t want to learn the wrong ones or buy a book to certify it!

Dude this seems so complex lol

It’s crazy how I’ve been making music for over 16 years and know nothing about music theory :joy:

it is not really! it just sounds and looks like it! @POET

you have your simple notes Eddie Ate Dynamite Good Bye Eddie (E,A,D,G, B, E) which are the strings looking down the guitar. (top to bottom)

You have different notes on the fret board.

You have chords which form notes where you use a combination of fingers and these are called for example (C, A, G, E, D) etc. All of these have separate finger positions.

I am at the stage where I want tio play chords further up the fretboard; and to do this I form the C,A,G,E,D finger positions at different fret numbers down the guitar.

I just want clarification of what these numbers are.

These five chords and their positions mean I can pretty much access all the notes on the guitar and make more complex tunes.

Cool dude thanks for the clarification. I think I’ll stick to clicking in notes on fl studio :upside_down_face:

Bro…I’m with you on guitar theory…sounds complicated but I bet it’s easy once you get to know it. I’ve been playing guitar for a while and I’m still afraid to learn to play correctly. I just learn different chords and put them together although I do understand music theory a little.

The piano was cake…but the guitar :confounded:

Think  i might learn guitar theory… So there’s like a formula to know all the chords without learning each individual one?

Yes there is. @AKendrick

Once you know how to form a C an A a G an E and a D you can form all of these chords up the fretboard. All their shapes.

so for a C chord you start with a open C then move down to fret 3 and form an A shape , then to fret 7 and form a G shape etc. (CAGED)

then for the A chord, you go down the CAGED system forming from an open A then form a G shape first on fret 3. (AGEDC)

So you work down the word CAGED in both the chord name and how to form it.

Then for G chord (GEDCA)
Then for E chord (EDCAG)
Then for D chord you form a C first up the fret board starting first from an open D for example. (DCAGE)

It is quite simple really in theory.

I just need to know the fret numbers to form the shapes of C,A,G,E and D to for each chord.

The problem is each AI i have used has given me different numbers of the fretboard for me to form the CAGED system on.

To learn the initial chords of C A G E D get one of these handy crib sheets.

mine is a lminated one.

Once you have this you can make really quick progress with guitar theory.

Here is close up showing the fret board and the finger positions.

On the other side there is the whole fret board and other stuff so you casn see individual notes as well as the chord shapes on the other side.

There is simple thoery to learn each individual note too which i can explain if you want.

Oh my lord !!! I’m gonna try this out bro. I’ve been using open 1pos chords and bar chords only…

Thanks for the explanation…I think I might actually try to start back on the guitar soon!

I use this app and just look up new chords but being able to form them on the fly like on the piano would open up a lot of possibilities!!!

Those analogue physical sheets takes the pain in the arse out of looking up chords on an app and mine was £5.

It is so worth not having to put the guitar down to look up chords!

Yea I bet … I’ve been wanting to put guitar in my music for a while now just haven’t got the motivation to get better yet. I think I’m gonna start my practice schedule back up. I bet real guitar would sound Soo much better than VST !!!

As a matter of fact… next song I’m gonna try a real guitar :guitar:.

In essence I want a picture of 5 different fretboards showing the finger positions and fret numbers of each C chord. for example:The C chord in the A position

Then the A chords ( 5 of them, one showing the A chord in the G positon, for example.)
Then the G chords “”
Then the E chords “”
Then the D chords “”

What is so difficult to understand?

This is the CAGED system to learning the chords.

I bought a book instead!

No one seems to be able to answer my question or make any sense of this CAGED system whatsoever…

Hope your enjoying music theory @labratmat

I played guitar as a teen.

My parents could only afford a few classes, so once I stopped going, I used ultimate guitar to learn how to play guitar.

The tablature/chord guides are all right and I understand what you mean by the CAGED system.
But what I get confused is what your question is.
Are you asking how do you play C in all shapes?

C in and A shape would be - X-3-5-5-5-3
Bar the third fret, press down the 4, 3, and 2 strings and ommit the 6th string from the playing.
A in a C shape would be - X-12-11-9-10-9
Harder to play but same idea, bar the ninth fret.
When the AI is saying that you need to fret 2 and 12 - thats AI being dumb. No one has hands that big XD

Also when you bar an A shape - there is variation how different players actually finger it. When I had younger fingers and want to play a C in an A shape I would bar the third frett with one finger, then press the other 3 strings with my ring finger. Any kind of variation on the shape works. Do what you find comforable.

Thanks for getting back to me @StarCrazy

I am just asking where my first finger goes and the note is played from.

So for the open C my first finger/index starts at fret 1, or for A chord in the G position it would start at fret 2, so ast to form the first shape of the G, or the C chord in the shape of the D would start at fret 10 with my index finger.

If you see what i mean?

cheers
