Gifted Schizophrenics

While I recognise that my verbal fluency has declined, in comparison to how I was before, I do recognised that it has continuously increased since I have become stable.

I study so it helps tremendously

I used to study mathematics in detail

After I developed Sz, and was put on APs I lost the ability to see the meaning in mathematics and appreciate its beauty

It just became numbers and symbols on a page

@ajassat Yes, I can completely understand that. I have said several times in posts that this time last year I could not even read or write. When I watched programmes I had to watch them with subtitles.

And now I am doing a degree in psychology… and have obtained 1st’s in all my assignments thus far.

So it is possible

I have also thought about studying psychology and your post has given me hope that I might be able to study it at the same level I was previously functioning at

@ajassat You can and you will. I will not lie, at first it is very hard maintaining concentration and it does take time. Make no mistake you need to be persistent, you need to retrainin your brain.

There are other psychologists who have psychosis who are very successful, if you have time watch “the voices in my head” it’s on Ted Talks, you can probably find it on YouTube. That will inspire you. Or even Jacqui Dillion.

It is a true shame that so many of us, both on this forum and outside it, have already given up, have retired to the idea that life is what it is. when we all have the potential not to be defined by schizophrenia.

Yes I am trying to distance myself from my illness and the traps it has led me into, and I am trying to go the full distance in my life

I think all humans are gifted. Finding what your gifted at is the challenge…

@flameoftherhine I completely agree. And look what happens when we individually discover what it is…

My grandma’s doctor has schizophrenia.

@insidemind A great example

Never taken an IQ test but always felt fairly intelligent, and a lot of people have said im smart, including teachers and mental health professionals, hell i didnt like school and dropped out because most of the work was too easy, plus i got into a lot of fights back then. One subject that never really made sense and ive never been good at though is math. I suppose it may also be of value to note that ive had schizophrenia my whole life, so i never had the experience of my brain functioning properly before illness hit, so there was never any cognitive decline for me

My thinking is so slow that it is actually dangerous for me to drive. So, I gave up driving two and a half years ago. That was almost too late.

IQ is affected. When I was in 4th grade they administered an IQ test to see if I could be admitted to the mentally gifted program. My result was 127. At 13 I was first admitted to the psych hospital and they were ruling out sza. A couple of years later I was tested again and the result was 112. The more I experienced psychosis the cloudier and slower my mind seems. I’m 34 now. :sun_with_face:
