I just called and left a message (office closed for weekend) to make an appt with a new psychiatrist. I’ve been seeing the same one for over 20 years and he’s 78. The new one is 30 years younger and more close to where I live. Is it reasonable to ask my old pdoc to send over my entire file to the new one? And will the new one even read it? Any tips/suggestions appreciated.
Usually when you change doctors you have to sign a release for them to get your records. I’m sure the new place will tell you all that when they call you back.
Thank you @disciple!
Yeah, they’ll probably ask for your records. You just fill out a form that gives your old pdoc permission to share your records with your new pdoc.
I sometimes wish I could see a couple of psychiatrists’ records of me. I think one psychiatrist’s records might not be flattering. I don’t think he could relate to most of my issues. I think he saw me as just another entitled kid blaming his father while his father did his best for him. That might be substantially true, but there was still some legitimacy in my complaints. It wasn’t something that pdoc could relate to.
I got my records when I applied for disability. To be honest they were pretty bland and reflected the 5 min intervals I normally spent with my pdoc. I’m guessing I got disability based off diagnosis because based off his records I seemed a lot more stable than I was.
You have the right to see your records. They can charge you for copies legally, but you can still obtain them
This was from an experience over thirty years ago, so those records are probably lost. I doubt if they would be too critical of me, but I bet there were some things about me my pdoc had to question.
yea it’s reasonable to get your files transferred to the new pdoc… if he/she will read it all that is a good question… when i was in the psych ward i always wondered if they even read my records…
Thanks @lekkerhondje!
