I am stable now on 4mg Risperdal and want to know the equivalent Geodon dose. Will the max Geodon dose work as well as 4mg Risperdal? Anyone switched between Geodon and Risperdal?
Wikipedia says that Risperdal is 38% more effective than Geodon.
I will ask my psychiatrist 8 Jan. I think 120-160mg should work but that might have side effects as its a high dose
Geodon was less effective for me in terms of positive symptoms, but it wasn’t too sedating. Appetite from hell and weight gain were my big issues (although not as bad as Zyprexa). I’m able to cope with some positive symptoms in exchange for being able to function well cognitively. I can’t stand meds like Haldol, which shut off the parts of my brain that I need for work. I also can’t get too fat because of my heart issues.
You’re right, I am thinking about doing the same, exchanging some negative/cognitive symptoms for a bit of positive symptoms. Its my best and only choice to improve.
As long as you have control over your positive symptoms no need to worry. Its when things go out of control then require urgent treatment options like using stronger AP, increasing dose etc. Its a trade off between less negatives with more positives and if its fine then no problem.
@Aziz, If you are stable on Risperdal, why on earth do you want to switch to Geodon? Every time a patient switches to a new med, he risks the new med not working, and also risks the old med not working as before. And this is like a 30% chance, according to my pdoc.
I was going to message you about this medication! I just want you to be free from all those negatives and be able to do things again.
You’re right, my pdr told me the same and he doesnt want to change my meds. But I am tired of the severe negative symptoms.
Thanks @anon10648258
Just don’t give up seeking better treatment
Every time I was not happy with a med, my old pdoc wanted me on Clozapine.
I rejected that every time, and forced him to try all the ones we could until a balance was struck with Amisulpride in the end
@Aziz, Just imagine what it would be like living with both negative AND positive symptoms cause that’s what it could possibly be like.
If your negative symptoms are truly sz negative symptoms then nothing can be done about it. No meds can change it. You just have to either live with it or learn to apply your will.
On the other hand, if your “negative symptoms” are really due to depression, then it’s just a matter of getting on a good AD and/or mood stabilizer then, you would be fine.
Sadly they’re not. They’re really sz negative symptoms. I don’t have depressive thoughts. I tried Wellbutrin for 6 weeks, it just made me slightly worse. I am stuck. I had slightly less negative symptoms on lower AP dose but had some positive symptoms. I guess I can try Geodon for a week or two if my psychiatrist allows me. On Latuda I had slightly less negative symptoms but had some positive symptoms.
I tend to agree that yours are probably true sz negative symptoms. Especially since your pdoc thinks so.
Just know, @Aziz, that you are in my daily prayers.
Thanks @SkinnyMe
I wish that they would make a test to know which antipsychotic works best for every individual.
yea that would be nice if they could test it. Sadly enough it’s all trial and error
Geodon gave me horrible heart problems it was horrible experience, stay on risperdal why change if its working.
