Gaba? For negative and/or positive symptoms

Hi guys. I’ve exhausted myself over the course of say 12 years looking up, trying and experimenting with different supps, especially regarding cognitive and negative symptoms. Everything from b3 to ginko to mucuna puriens (l dopa)

I simply can’t look deeply into gaba today. So, has anyone tried it and can it help???

I take abilify max dosage 30mg

I think it lowers cognition, i tried depakote who affects GABA receptors and it freaked me out

I had a quick look at Google results for schizophrenia and gaba. Seems to be a major role player. Worth trying for me still, even if it only improves my sleep. According to a quality smartwatch I got the other day I’m getting very little rem and deep sleep

Thank you for your reply

Im on 900mgs a day it seems to be working…

Thank you. Will be trying!

The evidence suggests that GABA supplements don’t cross the blood brain barrier, or if they do it is in such small amounts as to be irrelevant, so it may have zero effect on your brain, however, it may effect the enteric nervous system in your gut and have a minor effect on you.

I took 500mg and didn’t notice any effect. I took 1000mg and had a 2 hour long body buzz. But that is it. I didn’t feel calmer, it didn’t help me sleep, I didn’t notice much of anything.

I’ll take that into consideration. The supplement I’m looking at is 3grams at night. Found on a bodybuilding supplement website. They like to pump big doses of stuff usually. Have to say I’ve gained some benefit for negative symptoms from pre-workout supplements. Have to mention that my positive symptoms are very stable on my meds and therefore I can probably take more risks with supplements.

A quick glance at Dr. Google suggests that it was previously thought that gaba doesn’t cross the bbb. New research seems to contradict these findings

I took a gaba supplement the other day and got sleepy.

I’ve spent a long time researching GABA before trying it and there is a lot of conflicting information out there. Depending on what website you visit it does or does not pass the BBB, and if it does it is in small amounts, however I tend to believe it doesn’t based on my experience with it. It seems to be harmless so give it a try and see what happens. That’s what I did, I didn’t notice much of an effect so I stopped using it.

Another thing I read was that l-arginine helps GABA cross the BBB much more efficiently, I tired that and again didn’t notice anything either.

Benzodiazepenes work on GABA receptors in the brain and based on my experience there is no comparison between them and GABA supplements. A Benzo will calm me down and put me to sleep, GABA supplements didn’t do that at all. I used the NOW brand.

I’ve also read that what little GABA does cross the BBB is removed 17x faster than it enters, so again it has negligible effect.

For negative and positive symptoms I’ve heard a lot more positive things about l-theanine and glycine than I have for GABA.

But GABA is cheap, and some people swear by it, so give it a try, if it helps you that is a good thing.

Thank you! Worth a try for me. Also because that what works for some , doesn’t work for others. I reckon especially with supplements and medicine for mental health. As an example I have zero effects from most so-called nootropics that some swear by…

Wild goose chase for me, this pursuit of drastically improving my negative symptoms…

Yeah, everyone is different. What works well on one person can be useless or detrimental on another person.

I use large doses of l-theanine and large doses of glycine and find them extremely helpful. Others however find them useless.

Its just a game of guess and check. Pick a supplement, try it, see what happens, If it works great, if not move on to something else.

I have been on a GABA supplement for the last 2 weeks, at first it seemed to help some, but now I don’t notice much of an effect from it. I did a handful of times get a soothing body buzz out of it & seemed to help usher in calmness… Maybe I will give it a break for a couple days and try it again…

Good for you. I’m noticing amazing results from cbd oil. Yes, Cbd oil!

Research will lead you to some amazing results!

Atypical antipsychotics deplete GABA on purpose(despite it has nothing to do with psychosis) because high amounts of GABA often results in tardive dyskinea when taking anti-psychotics. This is probably the main reason that it’s less likely to get tardive dyskinea on atypical AP’s rather than first generation AP’s. I tried 750mg, but got involuntary movement in my hand after a couple of days. So I tried taking only 250mg a day, and at this dosage it doesen’t seem to give me dyskinea.

So be carefull to stop taking gaba if you get twitches or involuntary movement.
