February is garden planning. march is garden prep

ok I have a list of what im going to be growing this year. I ended up planning on more annuals than I thought. yes it’s a pain in the ass redoing all the work every spring but I have the time to do it.

here’s what I got planned.

herbs: onion, garlic, thyme, jalapenos, oregano, cilantro, sage, savory, leeks, and chives.

veggies: corn, asparagus, brussel sprouts, turnips, carrots, salsify, tomatoes, broccoli, and potatoes,

greens; kale, lettuce, spinach, and cabbage.

I decided not to grow any pole beans, but I am leaving a spot in the yard open for them in the future.

that’s it. should be enough to keep me busy, the first order of business is chopping up the trees in the front yard. dad said he would fell them for me if I would clean and chop them up with the chainsaw. will probably do that first or second week of march and then prep my garden beds. most of what I grow will be grown in raised beds.

That is a good list. I’m currently trying to decide what to grow. I have some old seeds and plan to see if any grow. I’ve had years old ones germinate.

I plan on buying a small tiller with my taxes. Something electic because I am only doing small areas/patches. I grew a lot of tomatoes from 3 plants tied up on my fence. The neighbor doesn’t weed eat too close so he avoids my plants. Nice guy.

I am not sure what all I am growing aside from tomatoes and cukes. Maybe some peppers though I never have good luck with them. Maybe some pile beans, we love green beans.

Oh, I had a lot of pumpkins grow from some that we threw out. Don’t know if I will try more this year. Would love watermelon. Or cantaloupes.

Meant to ask, are you starting seedlings? I try to grow some of my stuff from seed.

yeah I thought about pumpkins and melons. my niece wanted me to grow watermelon, but I decided ill just buy them from the store on rare occasions as I don’t eat much melon, just the 4th of july really.

you mean like sprouting them and transplanting them into the garden? I don’t think so. it takes up so much space inside I will probably just direct sow sometime in april

I’d eat more of them if we had them. They are expensive here. When I lived Down South on a farm we had a huge garden. I really miss it. We had all sorts of stuff.

I didn’t like growing okra though. Well, picking it. It got pretty flowers and tons of hummingbirds loved it.

Sounds like you have a pretty good plan going. I am not really one for working the soil but I wish you well. Hope your garden is bountiful!

You, too @anon4362788!

I always hear people speak well of okra so I ate it once and didn’t like it

Yeah, that is what I meant.

I use the seed starter flats. They go in my kitchen window over the sink. My cats got into my plants last year so I just bought a few plants.

Yeah it can be slimy and people don’t like it. I can cook it good but I don’t like to. Glad I live with non-okra eaters.

Is the gardening new in your present place. I ask because you said you have to clear the land. Do you have any experience before this?

Plant some gourds under a tree so they’ll grow up in the tree. Just for fun -

well I’ve gardened in the past. last year I cleared a spot for the first time on this property and discovered the trees were casting a little too much shade during the fall and early spring. in the summer, the site I choose gets plenty of sun.

im still relatively new to gardening. I plan on starting some compost bins this year with leaves and grass clippings and food scraps for some fertilizer late fall.

besides clearing the trees I have to fix the water spout in the back of the house, that is what derailed my garden last year, discovering that it has a leak from not being properly overwinterized in the past. if I can’t get that fixed I will have like 50 yards of hose in the front yard using the water spout at the barn.

so far I’ve grown carrots, potatoes, jalapenos, lots of greens, onions, and peas mostly and a few tomatoes. this year will be my biggest garden to date. o and I had a raised bed full of thyme. I like to dry the thyme and use it in a tea. It’s got kind of a off flavor, but I like it.

That sounds like a great garden! And fresh jalapeños are the best! I do a small garden some years. This year I don’t have the money

I might try container gardening this year. With the ongoing drought in California, I’m thinking this might be a better option. Does anyone have experience with container gardening?

Cool. The only thing I may do is try those upside down tomato containers.

never seen that…sounds interesting. i’ll google it. tomatoes are popular in this area of the Midwest. lots of people at work used to grow tomatoes. my uncle has a canning thing. I should maybe try to score that off of him and can some. he doesn’t use it anymore. last year we got more tomatoes then we could eat.

Tomatoes are difficult to can properly. Best to make them into sauce or salsa.

lol. @anon4362788. is the go to authority on gardening knowledge here. good to know. thanks for the tip.

Not everything! I learned a lot when I worked on a farm and an old man was my boss. He passed on a lot of knowledge.
