Fake hunger from APs

I’ll be so full and then two hours after I take my meds I am starving again. I have to literally write down that I’m not hungry before I take my meds to try and remind myself not to eat. When I do cave in and eat late at night I always regret it the next day. But the APs turn the hunger switch on in and it feels real, even if it’s not. Just ranting.

It is fake hunger. You coined a new term @thomas! I never heard that term before but it is 100% true. I beat myself up for caving in and succumbing to my fake hunger, especially late at night. I should just drink a glass of water and just go back to bed but I never think of it in the moment.

This is so true. Several different APs triggered insatiable hunger in me. But, I’m on Haldol now and it’s not doing that to me.

Glad to hear that @LilyoftheValley
I’m on Seroquel and even after 6 years it still kicks on the hunger switch. Though not quiet as bad as it used to.

That’s good that it has at least less effect on you now.

I take my risperdal right before sleeping so it makes me more sleepy. But it does make me hungry during the day.

Its best to take the meds at night with some food.

If U have to take it during the day, try having a cup of coffee to “curb” the “hunger” from the APs.

I’ve also found if I ate late at night I woke up hungry regardless of how much I ate…I mean like I had takeout after having supper.

When I was on olanzapine I ate voraciously, I was always hungry. At my heaviest I was 240lbs.

I don’t have this problem now that I am on Lurasidone, lost all that weight, I now weigh 173lbs

I looked this up. It is also called, “Latuda.” It is used to treat depression, like in bipolar disease.

Yeah, Latuda is the brand name.

My pharmacy sometimes gives me the bottle the manufacturer packages it in, instead of putting the pills in a typical pill bottle. The manufacturers bottle says “Antipsychotic” on it.

It’s used both for bipolar depression and schizophrenia.

Latuda is an AP for schizophrenia as well. I tried it but it did I had some unpleasant side effects. Glad it’s working for you and you were able to lose the weight!

I would eat six times a day. Divide three meals in half. Eat every three hours so you always have food in your stomach. But don’t over eat. Pick low fat snacks like vegetable sticks and hummus. It’s hard. But I did that and it helped the constant hunger. Drinking cold water also helps the stomach pains.

Can you take both risperdone doses at night?

I’m thinking I did that when I lost all that weight. And I’m thinking it helped curb my ‘fake hunger’ during the day. But I’d wake up with the fake hunger.

@thomas

A partial solution to the increased appetite is exercise.

It sounds stupid, but it gives you something to do and it will naturally make you want to eat healthier.

I had the same hunger when I was on 4mg night only. It stays in the blood stream for a very long time.
