Evicting roommate?

So my roommate moved in back in June and has been the messiest slob I’ve ever known. His room is a disaster. Ive wanted him out since he moved in basically but couldn’t afford rent on my own. I still can’t but now he’s not even paying rent. It was due on the 25th and he just now came up with a third of it, and electric is due soon. I doubt he has money for that. He’s hardly ever home but his stuff takes up 2/3 of the house. By stuff I mean… trash mostly. I care for his cat even tho I didn’t agree to it. But he was letting her starve and her litter box get real messy.
I’m thinking I’ll take the money he has since he’s behind anyway and tell him he has to get out. Worst case I’ll apply for rental assistance. But I should be hearing about disability within the next month and the lady on the phone implied I was approved.
What would you do??

I don’t know what I would do. But I understand why you would be mad. He should pay his share and take care of his animals

I’d be inclined to cut my losses and ask them to leave. Red flags if they are out all the time and not paying the rent.

I was thinking of getting a room mate, but this puts me off

Sorry this person is treating you like this. Not fair.

Agree with @rogueone on this - cut losses.

Better to do it now than when the debt gets way too high and you’ll never see it

Stop taking care of the cat, take pictures of his negligence, and report him for animal abuse.

I don’t know if evictions are even going on right now. Did they lift the ban? Either way, you should probably talk to your landlord. Is it a single person or a company? If it’s a single person you might be able to take to them about the price and what you can afford and see if they’ll work with you.

I agree with @LED,

Even when they move, they won’t take care of the cat.

Sounds horrible. Don’t know what’s best.

I would definitely kick him out. He sounds extremely rude, not caring about your comfort, not caring about paying the bills, and he’s even leaving his cat’s care up to you? None of that should be tolerated, IMHO. He is taking advantage of you. I bet he thinks he can get away with all this, because you’ve been tolerating it this far.

I think it’s time you put your foot down.

I did end up telling him to move. He said he would by the weekend but we’ll see.

I hope he leaves by then. When he does leave, change the locks on the doors.
