I get barraged with messages telling me that I’m going to Hell. So, I don’t think I can read the Bible on my own.
Honestly @SkinnyMe I don’t want to dis your beliefs but if something is making you ill - stop doing it. Maybe this is uncalled for and too political but part of what made me an atheist is the idea of heaven V hell. To me its a way of controlling people.
Make sure you know the voices are just a hallucination. They’re not a messenger from god.
Try filling that space with something related to reading. Maybe you ought to try to find some books that aren’t directly related to holy books. Fantasy novels, books talking about certain subjects from history, or even philosophy. I found philosophy really holds my attention when I am feeling slightly psychotic. Psychology is also very interesting if you move away from academic books on the subject.
Mindfulness mediation is highly recommended if you want something to soothe your nerves.
I don’t read scripture anymore or go to church because it is too triggering. I am healthier without it. I focus on doing good works instead. I figure, if I am helping my fellow humans, I am living a life in accordance with the bible. I don’t need to prove my faith to anyone, including myself. Anyone who thinks they need to do religious things to be a good follower of that religion is seriously misunderstanding the point of religion. It is to provide a moral framework in which you can help others. All religions basically boil down to “be nice and treat everyone with respect” and all the problems people have with religion come from overthinking beyond that basic rule.
sometimes the bible makes me feel bad …most of the time it builds me up…I tend to get bad feelings reading the old testament so I just stay in the new testament.
@SkinnyMe I can’t go into it here because of rules but if you want more information about a subset of catholics who focus on good works rather than church and scripture, you can PM me. I studied with them for years.
It gives hope when everything is lost so not stop reading it.
It can be dangerous. I decidedto read. IThe part about man cannot live on bread alone and I started to quit eating. Dangerous for a past anorexic.
I thinkit means tending to the practicalies of life, but more than that - spiritual.
Yes need to pursue spiritual rather than stick with physical things alone.
I don’t like reading the bible on my own. it is hard to understand sometimes, and just to accept it all, and very harsh sometimes. I believe that G is empathetic.
being at church is different though then i like listening. and also singing to the songs with everybody it is quite spiritual to me
My spiritual advisor told me not to read the Bible by myself but to attend Church and listen to the Church’s interpretation of it.
Wow that’s like what I said. Cool.
I agree with it.
@Ninjastar, you can close this thread now. Thanks.
