Must be nice to have nailed down photosynthesis.
If I were alone with a goat in an island, I would die of starvation
I eat meat. A lot. I also used to raise and kill my own. Up until recently I raised my own chickens for meat and eggs. Before moving from NC I raised chickens, cows, and pigs. Processed all my meat myself and with my boss.
When you raise and kill your own you get a deeper relationship with your food.
George Bernard Shaw once said, “Eating meat is cannibalism with the main course taken out.” I don’t subscribe to that, but I think we could eat less meat because of the impact raising food animals has on the environment. We could get some of our protein from beans and rice, tofu, and soybeans. We could have food engineers that would make the food taste good. There are people that do that.
The only remedy for that is to genetically engineer people to where they can produce their own chlorophiland get their sustenance from the sun. That is very unlikely to happen.
Those “Impossible” burgers are like Dow Chemicals had a toxic spill on a weird looking beef patty. We’re a long way off from faux meat being as satisfying as the real thing. Or as healthy.
Agreed. Would be very cool, though. (Read Old Man’s War by John Scalzi if you haven’t already. It’s relevant to the conversation.)
I was a pescatarian for about a year and a half.
Rastafarianism inspired me: they basically say that god has given us all we need in terms of sustenance, so why kill other living beings to survive?
Fish are still living beings, but I kinda rationalized it like fish aren’t cuddly so it’s fine to eat them
Its opposite to me. We always don’t eat self raising animal. It is necessary for my food meat to raise and killed by others.
Plant protein is incomplete. Its hard to combine plants to form complete proteins. I just know about lentils and rice, together they’re complete proteins. If you want to cut muscles by going to the gym I would choose whey isolate over soy protein as soy is incomplete protein.
I know people don’t. I was just saying that when someone does, the gain a deeper relationship with their food.
When all your meat comes from a store it’s easy to not know or care about the animal. Being personally involved changes you. A person may quit eating meat or just appreciate where it comes from more.
By incomplete I mean it doesn’t have all the amino acids.
That’s debatable. Meat contains cholesterol, but it does have a lot of protein. Protein is good.
Idk I know that the majority of body builders use whey isolate. Maybe its possible with plant protein.
And eating plant based is expensive. Too much for some of our budgets.
Sure, some will say buying vegetables is less expensive and it is if you can go grocery shopping frequently. I can’t. I shop once a month, normally.
I can’t afford fake meats or cheese, etc. If those alternatives were cheaper, I would buy some. But I just can’t on my current budget for a family as large as mine.
I just want to contend that what is more important here is understanding/compassion which go hand-in-hand with feelings/emotions.
Understanding that all living beings go through pain is why we choose to minimize harm. Not just to other living beings but to ourselves/our own desires.
I sometimes think plant protein is easier to digest than meat. It goes to your muscles quicker. I’m not saying we should quit eating meat. I’m saying we should eat less of it.
Yeah, I get that that’s a major reason people don’t.
It IS expensive and in general a lot of the healthier foods don’t have good shelf-life.
I myself don’t like taking a trip to the store to buy fresh veggies or whatever. So I opt for easier foods to make myself like cereals/PB sandwiches.
I feel that it’s a major responsibility of the industry to change its practices/pricing while also maybe on our end in sharing what we make with others. At least those of us that like to cook and serve and some others that don’t mind to do shopping for the groceries.
I wish more vegans would look more deeply at the issues instead of purely making it a moral problem…
We all want to win and don’t want to feel deprived/stressed or overworked.
I found this:
“Because lysine has been associated with muscle growth and methionine with accelerated fat loss, many bodybuilders choose whey protein for its superior profile of these amino acids”
“However, both soy and whey protein contain adequate amounts of essential and nonessential amino acids to support general health.”
