Since I don’t remember large parts of my life I deceided to get my medical records from any doc I can remember since I was 18(adult). I went to one and they say that I cannot have the records without the doctors permission. What is that about? Anyone know about this? Is that a thing?
Not really surprising. That’s how I always thought is has been.
I don’t know. The fourth time I was hospitalized I don’t remember the first 2 or 3 days I was so psychotic. I tried to get the records and they sent me a letter that said they were federally protected.
I still don’t know what that means.
Are you in the U.K.? I only know about U.K. records.
In the US. How is that right? I paid for these services. Why would it be that way?
Not sure about the us system.
How does it work in the UK?
You have to put a request in writing. Then I think they make photocopies for you. Not sure if you have to pay.
So in the UK you get them. No permission needed. Glad I live in the “land of the free”
Certainly no permission needed and they can’t be censored
I’m in the US. I just requested medical records from my neurologist and got them. I just had to fill out some forms. I never tried to get my records from my psychiatrist though, so I don’t know if they have a different procedure.
I did forms and showed I’d but they got really serious when they realized I wanted psyc records. Hopefully, the doc will grant me acess to the records and I can have them soon. If they don’t grant me acessible I feel like I won’t let this go and will keep trying. Thanks for the feedback! I really like this forum
I was able to get all my medical records by written request. I’m pretty sure the law is that they have to give you the records.
From the HHS.gov website, “As a patient, you have certain rights. Some are guaranteed by federal law, such as the right to get a copy of your medical records…”

I will call again tomorrow and ask questions. I will post what I find out.
Yes @Moonbeam! That’s what I thought!
HIPAA requires the doctor to follow protocol before releasing your medical records to you.
Scroll down to “Requests for Access”
Thank you @kindness
In my experience you don’t get the “real” records. You get a dumbed down version.
I was just in the hospital. When I got home I went on the patient portal to view my recent visit. Low and behold I had 3 prior psych hospitalizations on file, because of sister hospitals are all connected. I didn’t even know which hospital I was in the 3rd, 4th &5th times. It was very sad to read through those files. I pretty much relived what I could remember of that time the other day.
Just got the phone call! Dr released the records! Even if it is a “dumbed down” version I am excited. I can start to get real help!
