Does eating healthy food actually stop the food cravings

im taking risperidone and its making me wanna eat. when i was off medicine i had no appetite then now it has come back even higher than normal. i gained like 5 pounds this week. i dont wanna gain. so im just wondering if i ate like a bunch of pickles and carrots, would i actually quit craving ice cream and whatever else? i feel like that wont work cause i can eat a large amount and its more about the cravings for sugar and carbs and fat. anyone tried that?

yep. i know you cant drink unlimited water, but you gotta kinda just drink when youre hungry.

you will gain weight on risperidone, but if you eat lots of stuff even carrots you will be really hungry

it takes away your saiety, feeling full, makes you crave, and slows metabolism.

just dont buy junk food like chips crackers, candy…just meat and veg

Seriously. Risperdal made me gain all my weight and I actually lost moving to zyprexa another weight gainer. Still. I exercised heaps and lived pretty well but only really lost on a diet.

That is the thing. If it’s working well then mental health is so important. So. If you don’t want to change meds you have to change your diet.

Have a look at keto/lo carb. It’s a different way of eating but I’ve less psych symptoms on it and been doing it long enough to know for me it’s sustainable. I’ve lost oodles of weight which is great. 23kgs or 50lbs but the really curious thing is symptoms of mental illness are way down.

I’ve found that I do better when I indulge my cravings with a small (I mean SMALL) servings of whatever I’m craving…is ice cream calling my name? Well, I’ll have a 100 calorie serving of ice cream and stop there. That seems to keep me from eating an entire container in a binge fest. I found that if I try to sate the craving by eating “around” it, I end up bingeing on the craved food anyway after delaying and eating a bunch of stuff I didn’t even want. But it’s really an individual process that everybody needs to find their own method, as what works for me might totally be inappropriate for someone else. But I was on clozapine and now Zyprexa and I’ve lost over 140 lbs but I also exercise my butt off and do food diaries every day. You gotta do what works for you…

I have found (in my case) it is partly crappy food giving me cravings and partly habit. As I have changed my habits I am craving less and reaching for healthier options more easily. When I do slip and eat poor quality food I immediately notice how severely it affects how I feel and my general wellness and I get better at avoiding it in the future.

this was what i was thinking tonight. that my two options are either quit it, or try keto again. last time my blood sugar was always low but maybe on risperdal it wont be. idk i gotta figure it out and quick cause im gaining fast. i ate about 3000 calories today and im not very big so i only burn about 1650 a day.

i do that too if i try to have something else so i never do…but i dont think i could stop with a small amount of what im craving.

Calorie deficit is probably always good in any diet but have a look. Keto is a different way of eating but if your exercising I think it works well. You can still eat good but it’s a challenge for sure especially early.

I cook. I eat. I enjoy eating. Falling into the whole lo-carb thing came easy for me because I tend to cook something and eat it two days in a row because it’s just me and dad. I can do that so I save money and I want something to taste good.

It’s honestly worth a shot and weight loss if your moving can be pretty good. Keep up the exercise and there’s simple hacks like download carb manager that make that process easier…you can still eat well and do that whole diet thing…but it can be hard for some for sure.

i tried to ask on reddit about how to raise blood sugar some on keto. and it was immediately deleted by the moderators. so frusturating over there how anything even an honest question that is anything that could be percieved as a negative of keto is deleted or people get attacked.

did u find keto decreases ur appetite? i think it did for me last time

Yeah there’s some stupid stuff going with the whole process even here.

Honestly. I am not sure on the blood sugar but I’d be asking my gp. It’s all about net carbs for me so I can do some carbs but depends. I’d honestly download carb manager and start dialing in your food so you can see the whole interaction between carbs/sugar, protein and fat.

I think you can do it still for free but just plug in your food and work out a diet plan. The beauty is you can do it on the fly…I honestly walk around the grocery and see things and scan the bar code to see if it’s registered. It’s a good tool.

Yes. Sugar is a problem with keto I’d imagine I’m not sure the proper medical response there but always see a gp who’se up with the modern stuff. I’d start there.

yeah it seems to be pretty rare. what i could find on google said it mainly happens to kids under age 6. but my blood sugar is usually on the lower end. like even an hr after eating a high sugar or carb meal it will be 105. i ate almost 3000 cals high carb today, mcdonalds, and dairy queen and its currently 91. so maybe i should ask i dr. idk hope nothing is wrong there.

Yes. Do this and ask about the diet then. Important to sort out present health problems but honestly the whole keto thing has some merit but it’s not worthwhile doing if your compromised health wise.

What saves me is kool-aid. It keeps me hydrated and serves a rebellious side because it is sweet.

Im on Paliperidone which is a derivative of risperidone and I’ve gained 60 lbs this year! I’m constantly craving carbs and sweets.

Yes. I find that when I eat good, nutritious meals, (not just pickles), I don’t have room for the unhealthy, processed food like bagged dinners, meals from a box, and tv dinners. Nothing like healthy, homemade meals made from healthy recipes. And they’re much more delicious too! @irrelevant

I do have a bad sweet tooth however. To limit its impact, I limit my sweets intake to three small pieces or cookies a day. And I drink black, unsweetened, caffeinated coffee all day and evening. Mine is on the weak side to prevent sleeplessness.

I’ve been on Risperdal for almost 30 years and my weight has been normal for many years.
