Does anyone know why schizophrenia has decreased IQ?

A damage due to the disease is possible, but it doesn’t mean you can’t recover it. Neuroplasticity fixes everything.

At 13, I tested at 144 IQ…

The schizo dumbed me down…

The clozapine / lithium, however, now have me feeling much less impaired!!

Varies with cause. In some cases reduced mental function is caused by brain injury before or after pregnancy, alcohol exposure during brain development and or other issues which are not inherited.

Very highly intelligent people are often stricken with schizophrenia and certainly some medications can dull cognitive functions. Like all things in life it is a trade off between benefits and risks. Untreated psychotic, or for that matter many other psychiatric conditions, are devastating on the patient and his/her family, friends, and employers. Constant new treatments are under development to minimize side effects and improve efficacy. But one can do mental exercises to keep up one’s faculties: crossword puzzles, reading, discussion groups, listening to intellectually stimulating programs, and so forth are helpful. Most importantly, don’t cross bridges you haven’t come to. If a problem seems to be developing, there are other medications and exercises to be considered. Do talk with your physician about your concerns and check out some of the books available for cognitive enhancement that has been written especially for those who in the normal aging process recognize a loss of sharpness. Use well all you have.

I read that IQ tests were originally introduced mainly to test education rather than intelligence.

In my case, after I’d done math, I scored higher on the math part of the IQ test than the other parts.

After I’d studied english, yeh I did better on the english questions on the IQ test.

Me I don’t pay much attention to IQ tests, but that’s just my opinion. If my IQ has fallen since being sz it’s probably due to other effects rather than a lower intelligence, such as poorer concentration or the time lapse since I was last studying/using my brain.

Edit: Just my opinion but I’m unsure of a single quality called ‘intelligence’ I think it’s possible to be smart in different ways.

people do nothing after the outbreak of their first symptoms. That is why their intelligence falls.

Our learning probably stagnates with this disease, Including socially and academically. I heard someone famous say that you have to exercise your mind as well as your body. If you don’t read or study you might lose some intelligence, much like you lose muscle mass if you don’t exercise.

I had an IQ drop as well, recently. I went from 136 to about 131, so a five point drop. I’m a little saddened by it. Most of my loss is in mathematical ability. I can’t do mental math very well anymore and mess up numbers a lot when reading them.

136 to131 could be within the margin of error .
