Do you think schizophrenia is the worst thing that can happen to a person?

Do you think there is anything worse?

Yes. There are many medical problems that are worse than schizophrenia IMO.
There are also many things that can happen in a persons life that are worse than being schizophrenic.

Yes.

Just one of a large number of examples. I’m grateful to only have schizophrenia.

Can I ask why you say that?

Its one of the terrible things that can happen to somebody. For a lot of people it was the worst thing that happened to them.

Because I don’t schizophrenics have a monopoly on human suffering. Self-pity, maybe.

These absolute questions are fun and also provoke thoughtful conversation.

Suffering is all relative. But as far as severity of suffering from my personal experience. It’s bad. I rather suffer physical pain then from severe mental illness like this… For others, physical pain can be debilitating and make them want to die just as SZ can make me want to die.

my SZ has also caused me to suffer severe physical pain due to fear and inability to care/seek help for myself.

I’m sorry…do your meds help you at all?

IDK. Childhood cancer is pretty bad. There are also many illnesses or conditions that cause severe, chronic physical suffering. There’s a lot of stuff out there that will kill you.

Medication helps, I can’t imagine not being on medication. Having an intensive care team helps. I think of positives as flare ups now that need to be controlled by reducing stress, trigger and staying in treatment. Negative symptoms seem to have no solution. worried cognitive symptoms are getting worse.

SZ for me is ongoing suffering, but I usually don’t compare it to anyone else’s suffering.

Can I ask what meds you have found helpful?

I was on max seroquel + abilify before, 10 years but it stopped working

I am now on max ziprasidone + Latuda. (I hope this will work long term - its only been 2 years)

  • Bentropine + Mirtazpine + Alprazolom.

If I experience it I’ll tell you.

No, the worst thing is when it’s one hour until quitting time and the boss tells me to go clean the locker room restrooms. I hate cleaning those restrooms.

SZ exists on different severity levels from “untreatable” to “highly treatable.” I would consider neurodegenerative diseases like ALS or CJD to be worse than some phenotypes (sets of observable symptoms) of SZ.

But it’s definitely up there among the most problematic diseases across all categories of medicine.

Schizophrenia is pretty much the top dog as far as mental illnesses go.

But there are certainly many other problems and negatives in this world than mental illness.

I’ve been in that place, where you feel like you got the heaviest of burdens (due to schizophrenia).

And it is severe because it represents a definite “break” from reality.

But this is a philosophical question and just like mental health and sanity is not the end-be-all (and goodness in itself), mental illness not the end of the world either or badness in itself.

Luckily, the world is not decided om whether you have schizophrenia or not, if it was there probably wouldn’t be any (or as many) with schizophrenia.

Would you roll the dice in this world again? Life is a completely random thing, anyways. We just gotta play our part, that how the show goes.

(Btw. I just made my account, been browsing the last week. I’ve been schizophrenic my whole life pretty much, 32 at this point, but only recently fully got enough insight into the disease to fully incorporate the mindset into my mind. But I like philosophy, and hey, even schizophrenics are allowed to do philosophy, right? )
