Do you think medications are at least partially responsible for what we consider "negative" symptoms?

You know, Anhedonia, lack of motivation, concentration issues and the like. I go back and forth on this. The truth is, I’m not sure how much is sz and how much is medications.

Do you think that AP’s contribute to the negatives symptoms of your illness?

Yes, they’re sedating.

If they are used in excess of the amount needed to reduce neuroinflammation to functional levels you get a needless amount of sedation.

I voted yes. I would have preferred a poll that asked the question has negatives improved after taking the atypicals instead of the oldschool meds. Because the less conventional I take the less the negatives are.

Go ahead and make that poll @columbus
Personally, negatives are driving me crazy even on a atypical AP(Aripiprazole). But yeah, I prefer the atypicals as well.

From my experience of stopping meds for 1-2 years yes meds partially cause negative symptoms. I think its 40-50% meds 50-60% sz. Some people get less negative symptoms from the same meds as we have different body chemistry. On meds I had the least negative symptoms on partial dopamine agonists like Abilify so you’re already on the best for negative symptoms.

I had to stop Abilify/Rexulti for other side effects than positive and negative symptoms. I wish that Vraylar would be available here in Canada.

I know, Aziz. Canada will probably have Vraylar available sooner or later. It’s just hard to say when. Sorry you have to keep waiting longer than end of year like you were hoping for.

They improve my negatives but give me a bit of sedation.

You have less negatives than without meds?

I think it varies depending on the individual. I’ve known of someone who came off meds cold turkey more than once and they are currently not on aps yet feel amotivation. Maybe due to that or just the disease.
But I only feel the negatives when I have the ap in my body. I know from experience.

APs completely take away my ability to be creative. And they make me full. I still take them though

Some people have that fantasy that going off meds will make them healthy again. At least in my case, that’s totally not true. While I’d like to think my intelligence is merely suppressed by medicine, the truth is that it’s been hit hard by the disease itself and those scars remain with or without medicine. Meds just keep me from being delusional, plain and simple.

Its true but I had much less negative symptoms when without meds. I was living independently in university housing, shopping, exercising, going to university, etc Now I am in bed 90% of my time. I got psychosis 1-2y later and I had positive symptoms that gradually got worse but much less negative symptoms.

I know that quitting meds is not an option for me anymore as I already tried it.

How big a dose are you on?

Meds causes negatives symptoms, because untreated schizophrenics have no negatives. But untreated schizophrenics have different positives that causes them serve behavioural disorders.

4mg Risperdal but its not just about the dose and med, its about body chemistry, we have different body chemistry. Some users are on strong meds or a higher dose and have much less negative symptoms than me.

It gradually got worse. At first I had almost no positive symptoms, then I became weird having weird thoughts in the back of my mind but didn’t hallucinate or act on my thoughts. Then paranoia started and I stared acting psychotic and paranoid. When I was hospitalized after 1-2y I attacked my family and started crying saying nonsense, 4 cops came to my basement to calm me as my parents told 911 that I was violent.

I was hoping for stopping meds for good but sz got me in the end, I couldn’t escape :frowning:

When I started becoming psychotic I quit university and the university housing and the friends I made there :slightly_frowning_face:

I went back to my parents’s house and then I was hospitalized.
