Do you read novels?

I used to read alot of books but most of them were how-to/self-help books. I rarely read novels. I’d like to, but it’s somehow hard for me to relate to the main charactors in them.

Recently I read a few novels. Natsume Soseki’s “Kokoro”, and a few others. I liked them, but only half-heartedly.

I wonder what makes it hard for me to relate to novels?

I find it easier to read short stories. After reading quite a few by Henry James I became comfortable enough with his style and favorite themes to read his most popular novel, Portrait of a Lady.

But there are many many good short story writers you can read if your problem is concentration or involvement in a story. Some writers have written both stories and novels, and that’s another way to approach it.

If you have a genre that you like such as detective, sci-fi, or fantasy you can start looking in that field.

Sure Koontz is cool and King before he got old.

I read no books, I used to have two good book collections in the past, but each time I had to leave I had to leave these behind. Once in America and once in Europe. I like books with mathematical formulas.

Right… I like true stories such as the classic “little house” series and Torey Hayden’s One Child and Tiger’s Child.
I also like children’s books like Alice in Wonderland and Peter Rabbit, etc.

Oh,and you should try with Aleksandar Hemon. The master of story telling. Will not regret it!

You might even like The Arabian Nights Tales.

Oh, could you tell me a litle more about Alexsandar Hemon?
What kind of books does he write?

Really, I’ve heard of it but never read it…

Just a few days ago, I started reading Neil Gaiman’s “Neverwhere”, but I’m already struggling… lol

Actually,he is from Eastern Europe but lives in Chicago. He writes on english.
it is hard to describe becouse it is pure talent and magic of story telling. He often writes about childhood, using a perspective of a child, about war, being a stranger and immigrant, he always writes about ordinary people, just like us.
I  Hemon

Wow, sounds really worth trying!
But one thing I don’t like about the library I go to is that they don’t have books on English.
Only books on Japanese.
They might have some, I’ll look and see.

You are from Japan? Then you have your own classic writer, the Great
Haruki Marukami

Yes, I’m from Japan, I never tried Murakami’s novels, I don’t know why, lol.
Maybe I should try some of them first.
I’m sure they are in the library collection.

Have you ever read Murakami’s storeis?

Of course, and he is very popular between young people here

Thanks for your recommendation.
Sounds a little difficult for me…
But I can try the japanese translation.

Oh, really, that’s nice…
I’ll go to the library again on 1st April, so I’ll look for a few books of his.
