I used to be an avid and eclectic reader pre illness but in the 40+ years of being ill the books I have read have been few and far between. I have books bought me for Christmas 2014 that I have not picked up to read . I had only suggested books as presents because I couldn’t think of anything I wanted.
I think concentrating on something for any great length of time is the problem. It just seems like too much effort to plough steadily through a book. It also doesn’t help that I struggle to visualise characters and scenes from books ie get a mental image of them.
I take it in spells. I spent this one period of about eight months at school where I read fifteen hours a day. The first thing I would do when I woke up was grab a book, and I would read until I went to sleep at night. Sometimes I didn’t stop to eat. It was an exhilarating time. It was a long time ago. These days I take it in spells how much I read. The last thing I read was “The Merchant of Venice”.
I don’t read as much as I want to. I have a really hard time focusing long enough, but also I seem to have a really hard time with any sort of suspense lately. It’s easier in books than movies, movies I’ll just immediately turn off, but books if I’m in the middle of a dramatic part and need to put it down for any reason I’ll almost never go back to it because the suspense is just too much for me. My mind goes totally overboard and I just can’t handle it for some reason. So I don’t read nearly as much as I’d like because of it.
I generally read one book at a time, but I’ve been going back to the self-help books to revisit and re-digest the ideas I like. I can only read horror novels in short bursts before they bother me so I read a chunk of Stephen King and then something else for a bit.
This book is amazing. It isn’t your everyday read. It has schizophrenic overtones and is aesthetically pleasing. Get the physical copy because it’s part of the experience.
Maeve Binchy novels are entertaining and easy to read. I like biographies and autobiographies. I have reading months and non-reading months. I always have to re-read sentences and paragraphs because my mind wanders, but overall I enjoy reading.
I read almost every day.The last year i had read 10 books.I usually put a goal of 12 books in a year.I have plenty of time because i don’t have a job and it’s a good way to pass your free time.
I usually read classic books. Now i read ‘‘Journey to the center of the earth - Jules Verne’’
