I used to have good credit but I’m pretty sure mine was destroyed when I went psychoic, lost my jobs, and could no longer pay on my various bills/outstanding debts for a long time. I honestly haven’t even checked my credit score but I am quite sure it is horrible. It took me many years before I was able to get stable and get on disability. Long enough to demolish my credit.
My credit rating is so so. It’s not in the toilet, but it’s not particularly a high rating either. It’s just from money mismanagement, + 2 false claims against me.
One from Hydro One, who tried to tell me that I owed them $1,200 when I sold my cabin. Bulshit. My bills were paid in full
And Xplornet my last internet provider. They continued to charge me for 3 months after I had cancelled.
I never finished University because I became psychotic, but I still had a student loan to pay off, I paid off my student loan very slowly, it took me about 10 years, I used part of my disability check to do it. I did miss a payment one month, but I went through the proper channels to inform them I couldn’t make the payment so it wasn’t held against me. I’ve had a Visa since I was 16 and never missed a payment. I have a line of credit with the bank and never missed a payment on that either. I am not sure what my credit score is but I’m pretty confident in saying it’s up there.
Edit: I’m in Canada so I don’t know how it compares to the USA. I checked my bank phone app and according to that app my credit rating is “excellent” which is the highest level.
Edit 2: It says my credit score is 823 (It ranges from 300-900)
Pro tip, if you need some credit, buying diamonds at a jewelry store. Couple hundred to a few thousand, on credit with the store, then reselling the jewelry back. Lower out of pocket costs, lower interest, and a better return on your money.
I’m fortunate in the fact that I got a large back disability payment and don’t have bills that tax my monthly income too much. I have invested some of what I have in stocks and have a fair amount in the bank so I don’t really need to use my credit. Which is good, because, like I said, I’m sure my credit is lousy.
I’m deemed to lack capacity around my money, a psychologist did an assessment and yeah I have no money management skills according to her? Yet I have 3 credit cards including a Barclaycard. I pay my credit cards in full every month. Yet I lack capacity! That is paradoxical! Also I have a IQ of 69 (psychologist again) Go figure!!!
I have an excellent credit score. In ten or more years I think I was late on one payment-until two weeks ago. I forgot about a Kohl’s charge and Kohl’s sent me a collection letter. I have to go to Credit Karma and see if it affected my credit score.
In the US it’s quite common to get jewelry on credit, most shops carry their own financing. If you don’t pay on time they can file against you and really blow your credit with a default. But the boost you can get for paying it off quickly then selling it back can help bigger credit purchases.
I’m not sure about gold, I’ve always used gems. Diamonds mainly.
My credit score is surprisingly good but I don’t have a credit card since 2yrs. I had shopping addiction on Abilify but my parents paid my debt and it was paid on time no fees so didn’t affect my credit score. When I used to work I paid my Visa everynight right after using it during the day. I just have debit now and I put the remaining money of my disability in disability saving account where the government puts money in it everytime I put money in it.
For online purchases requiring Visa I use my mother’s credit card and I pay her back, she also has a higher cashback than me so its a win. She trusts me since I stopped the Abilify. For physical purchases I go with my mother or father to the store.
I burned down my credit years ago, then I was off the grid for a while, now my credit is “no credit” ie no credit rating pro or con. I use an Amex Serve debit card, $1 mo and no other fees. Works for me.
