I’m sorry that term was used in such a berating manner towards you. 
If I’m talking to guy friends and if the subject comes up about a celebrity or actress I’ll sometimes say “Yeah she’s a cutie.”
But if I compliment a girl face-to-face I’ll generally say “You’re very pretty.” Or something along those lines.
I have had women say to me “You’re a cutie.” I take it as a compliment

Well I get called cute too. It’s especially bad on social networking and dating sites like badoo or skout. Then they bring out the big guns; beautiful, gorgeous, pretty, hot when really I’m not! So who knows, beauty is in the eye of the beholder…

I was talking with my mom many years ago and I mentioned that I thought this 26 year old was cute. My mom admonished me and told me that you do not call adult women cute. I was about 20 at the time. She said, you can say a baby is cute or a 18 or 19 year old girl but my mom told me that calling a grown cute is a little condescending and a little disrespectful.
