Disability for Psychotic NOS

So I applied for disability a couple months ago under Bipolar Disorder but now that I have my dx as Psychotic Disorder NOS I have given t hem that information as well. The question I have is the blue book says I have to have documented symptoms lasting at least two years, but I haven’t begun discussing my psychotic symptoms with anyone until this year. I did have two suicide attempts several years ago due to my psychotic symptoms and am wondering if that will be sufficient. How do I go back and get the two years of documentation? Is there anything I can do? I’m afraid my Bipolar won’t be enough to get disability.

Provide the names of the doctors and places and dates for your treatment on that form for social security disability application. The Ssa will pull all the medical records

@NiceHat

What I’m saying is I was never honest about my psychotic symptoms. I never told anyone I was hearing voices, I always just said they were invasive t houghts. So there ARE no records of me having psychotic symptoms prior to several months ago. :frowning:

But you said you had suicide attempts, that’s just as bad. It would count for your case of disability.

You can still get disability for bipolar, it might be easier to get disability for bipolar disorder than Psychosis NOS.

Psychosis NOS is more of a vague diagnosis.
Lots of doctors give out this diagnosis when they are not sure what they are dealing with.

Best of luck @Sooner88!

I got approved for disability for having depression back before I became psychotic. They denied me the first time but the guy from the state told me to reapply as most people get denied on their first shot. So, I think bipolar disorder will suffice. Psychosis NOS
Should too especially if you have to get interviewed by a psychologist like I did the crazier the better!

Well I did have a few suicide attempts, does that help?

I’m on disability and the more records the better. As someone here already said, give them the names and approximate dates of the places you were treated (for your suicide attempts) and they can pull your records. Good luck

I got ssi after only having symptoms a year. my diagnosis from the first clinic was borderline personality disorder with psychotic NOS. I had a hospitalization just before I signed up for it.

I’ve had one voluntary admission for suicidal thoughts, three partial hospital admissions (one for self harm and two for psychotic symptoms), and I’ve been committed (sectioned) twice for suicide attempt or thoughts of suicide. And my parents had me put into a residential program for 4 months when I was 17.

I guess that’s good enough lol…
