Did anyone learn to drive after being diagnosed?

I’m 22 and I still haven’t learned to drive or ride motorbikes. I am socially reserved since childhood. I think too much about what others will think of me while learning to drive at this age. Really frustrating.
Anyone here has learned to drive after being diagnosed? If yes how did you go about it?

I learned to drive (on automatic cars) two years ago because my husband is not allowed to drive due to his epilepsy. So I had to learn, but I hate driving, its nervewracking. I could have learned sooner, but I was very ill, diagnosed with sz at 18, the age one can get a licence in South Africa. I’m now 31 and still without licence, because I am not looking forward to taking the driving test. I have a learner’s licence though, and its good enough for driving with my husband who has a driver’s licence.

Where I live automatic cars are really rare and expensive. :pensive:

Was it before or after illness?

I learned to drive at 31, 5 yrs after being diagnosed with this illness.

before diagnosis…but I was having mental symptoms not yet on medication though when I just passed my driving test

I learned to drive three years ago. That was before my diagnosis was changed to Bipolar. So at the time it was Schizoaffective, but before that it was Schizophrenia. I was around your age when I learned to drive. I took lessons from a driving instructor. I was put on vyvanse which also helped a lot then but I think it was just a crutch to get over my anxiety and nervousness. Now I can drive without needing ADD medications or stimulants. I have been driving perfectly well without any new medications.

It’s a matter of practice, focus, alertness, and paying attention. I would recommend driving lessons and online practice tests.

I got schizophrenia at 19 years old and I didn’t get my drivers license until I was 24 years old. It was really hard. I’m still a bad driver and scared of driving. I have to learn how to drive in crowded cities still, and I’m too scared to do that. I have to take abilify at 30 mg, the full dosage, so that I don’t have visual hallucinations or hear voices while I drive.

I had to quit drivers’ ed because of my condition. I turned seventeen two months ago but I quit back in September when I was sixteen. :frowning:

I learned to drive at a very young age by teaching myself then I’ve had my privilege to get a license suspended consecutively over a extended period.

So now I ride a bike everywhere.

Ive never been formally diagnosed or had a official drivers license.

You know a third of every dollar spent on gas goes to support terrorism against the western world, that’s not cool.
