“Even after controlling for a range of potentially confounding variables (socioeconomic status, BMI, demographics and others), the data revealed that people who did no exercise at all had a 44 percent larger chance of developing depression in comparison to those who exercised at least one hour per week.”
And it doesn’t matter what exercise or a need to break out in a sweat…
I exercise from 30- 40 minutes every day and I am not in the least bit depressed. And have not been for the past thirteen years. And I am diagnosed sza!!! You would think that I would have at least some depression going on with that diagnosis. But, no. Not me. Not in a very long time. And I attribute that to the fact that I exercise daily, meditate daily, take Fish oil daily, pray to my Higher Power several times daily, and sleep well each night.
I walk at least 2 hours a day, and I am hoping to make it 3 hours a day since I am unemployed at the moment. However, I have had dysthymia since I was 12. I’m 28 now.
I get a lot of exercise because I walk to and from work, and then just before I go to bed I talk a nice long walk. I think helps me sleep better, and I think it reduces depression, too. And I eat salmon 3 to 4 days a week for omega 3s.
Yes my dad “naturally” cured his depression so he claims by doing physical labor such as taking on a weekend labor intensive job. He thinks it will cure my schizophrenia too instead of meds. Either way, exercise does seem to help. I swim once or twice a week and it helps mentally.
There are limits to the positive effects of exercise, it doesn’t make you functional,
it doesn’t protect you from cold/flu,
fit people are as fragile as everybody else I can attest.
@labratmat Any type of exercise is good for the body. You physically feel better and your muscles are stronger. However, exercise isn’t the cure to mental illnesses.
I used to run almost everyday about four years ago. The runners high was always amazing. It’s just good for your brain to exercise. I don’t think it’s natural to be fat. With that said, I don’t run anymore and I’m fat so take that with a grain of salt.
I started doing a half hour walk a day. Got a fitness tracker then moved up to 11, 500 steps a day. Now I add to that a half hour of cycling. It really does help! Mentally it’s helped me start reading again…it’s not easy but I reckon it makes a big difference to your mental health as well!
