I was diagnosed with Schizoaffective disorder a little while ago, but I think it may be a misdiagnosis, I hear voices sometimes but there are times when they feel more like my thoughts than voices. Idk, I’ve done some reading on depersonalization and I feel like that more accurately describes what I feel, but I am inclined to agree with a professional because I find it hard to study myself. I guess what I’m wondering is are the two related? Do others with schizoaffective disorder feel depersonalized?
I have had bad derealization, which is similar to depersonalization. It is related to schizophrenia.
what is depersonalisation…what is it
I’m schizoaffective and I sometimes get really bad depersonalization and serialization. It’s part of the illness. My meds seem to help a lot with it.
I have schizoaffective disorder and I had severe depersonalization and derealization. It took almost 6 years to go away.
What you describe isn’t out of the question with your diagnosis. Thoughts which comment or talk to you on your behavoir are pretty similar and a big part of schizophrenia. It isn’t normal thinking. That is the issue.
You will find these days that diagnosis can change over the course of the disorder and the medications themselves. It’s not unsuprising but I’d stick to taking the meds and everything will sort itself out!
Depersonalization is very rare as a standalone disorder. It usually occurs alongside other disorders such as an anxiety disorder or psychotic disorder. Why it happens I dont think is quite known yet.
Huh, I have that a lot too. I didn’t look it up but I’ve had this since 12 years of age. I also have derealization but more so since my episodes ceased somewhat and I went into a semi-remission. I think I have rationalized it though.
We have a sense that is called “Proximity.” It senses the distances between body parts and between the self and other things in reality. It’s not hocus pocus. It’s just based on other senses like sight, sound, tactile bodily sensations, and by actions and reactions. If you didn’t have it, you would notice.
I believe that my sense of proximity has a major problem, and I would describe my scz with the definition of depersonalization, and explain that with the problematic sense of proximity. I believe that it is this problem with the sense of proximity that is why scz’s always believe in some form of telepathy/ESP of sorts.
I think the best way to deal with depersonalization and derealization is to become highly active physically such as in various work, crafts, sports, back country exploration and recreation, and even intimacy.
