I know it’s risky, but I’ve been cutting down my Haldol for the past few months. I’m now on half the dose I’m supposed to be, with no negative consequences yet. I’ve only been on Haldol the 9 months since my diagnosis. I’m 36. Does anybody have a similar experience? Anybody SZ diagnosed and NOT take APs?
I would never adjust my dose of medications without the consent of my psychiatrist.
Your playing with fire if you take it upon yourself to mess with your meds.
Don’t wait to get burned - Call your doctor.
Im trying to think of someone on here doing well off their meds and Im drawing a blank.
I tried cutting down on my AP’s despite being warned that I’d feel better, only to feel worse after a while.
… It landed me a trip to the psych-ward, and I had to have my dose almost doubled in order to be stable again.
Be careful. Be very, very careful. The drugs take time to build up in your brain, and they take a while to taper off, so at first, you’ll most likely not feel a diffrence until you do, to put it that way.
There are some people here that claim to be schizophrenic and don’t need APs. But I think you would find better odds with homeless people on the streets than those with an internet connection.
It’s been my experience that unmedicated equals hospitalization where you are immediately injected with Haldol and restabilized on your meds.
I think @Hedgehog gets by without meds.
I don’t recommend it though. After you get hospitalized your dosage will likely double and I am already maxed out on Geodon and take Latuda too.
I’ve never taken APs, or antidepressants or anti anxiety meds… and I “function.” But huge chunks are missing out of my life where normal experiences should be, and I’ve suffered to the point of this life absolutely not making any sense to me, even with a genuine faith…
I am terrified of meds and at 50 years of age I will not take them. However, I might have been spared a lot of suffering had I been treated properly at a younger age.
If you have the opportunity to receive treatment and better the quality of your life and capabilities, then I think you should. If you’ve been prescribed medication and it works and you can tolerate it, then that’s an obvious choice.
I didn’t know I had schizophrenia. I thought I was tormented by demons because I do spiritual battle in the army of God… Had I been helped and received treatment earlier, I might have been able to skip some really painful episodes.
I’ve had many years of therapy of all sorts, and I do absolutely recommend Cognitive Behavioral Therapy because it was life changing for me. Schizophrenia is not something you take on by yourself. It’s unfortunately your mind that you can’t completely trust so getting help and treatment is important or you can live in a delusional state…
If you’re on meds and they help you, please don’t stop. But you can also do therapy, like CBT, to help you feel more in control. And then diet and exercise helps too.
