So I was brought up being told that my family is part Native American. We have a lot of people in our family dark complexioned with dark hair and dark eyes. I’m semi dark skinned with dark brown hair and brown eyes. But my dna labels me as 100% Northern European (British Irish French and German). My dad says Native dna often doesn’t show on those tests. Is this true?
Paging @firemonkey !
I think most families have a Native American legend that simply isn’t true.
Especially for those of us with dark hair and eyes.
People just enjoy believing they’re part of that culture.
It’s extremely common.
When we were going through the adoption with my son,
We were asked about our ancestory.
My husband said Native American, because it had been passed through the family that they were.
We almost couldn’t go through with the adoption at all because he said that.
We had to get a DNA test and have several tribes to say he was not on their roster.
People just like the thought of it and tell their children.
I’m sure your test was accurate.
That is why we couldn’t keep our first two babies. They were Native American, so they were governed under tribal law.
I figure you’re right however disappointing it is.
I’m sorry @Loke
You hear something all your life and believe it,
Then learn something entirely different.
It is dissapointing,
But you have new cultures to connect with, so that’s exciting.
From that article that @firemonkey posted :
You can take a DNA test from Family Tree DNA called Family Finder that provides you with percentages of ethnicity, including Native American, as well as a list of cousin matches. They also offer additional testing that may be relevant if you descend from the native person paternally (if you are a male) or matrilineally (for both sexes.)
I also have a NA story that was handed down in my family. Not sure what to believe.
Also heard of that relative who was sent away.
We had the same ancestry belief passed through my family, but it turns out the amount of Native American DNA we have in our ancestry was negligible. I think this is a very common occurrence.
