Complementary treatment: Vitamins etc. What are your suggestions?

Hi, i am new here

A short personal description:

  • 12 years diagnosed with schizophrenia
  • on meds: 30mg abilify and 3mg risperdale

During a medical treatment i was given 7,5g drip infusion of ascorbic acid, which lowered my hallucinations for a short time. So i began wondering, if there was anything else antipsychotic but available in a more natural form like vitamine c.

I stumbled upon Hoffers megavitamine theory and vitamin b3 dependency for many schizophrenics / malvarians, and then this website where they are considered doubtful or so.

Are there any studies available on nutritional / supplemental support of schizophrenia lowering both positive and negative symptoms? Would be pleased to read more about that and any personal experiences on that topic.

Best wishes and health

A lot of people here have had success with Lions Mane mushroom extract and the super processed version of it called amyloban. I use plain lions mane and have a reduction in anxiety and more motivation.

Hoffers niacin theory has been discredited again and again. I made the near fatal mistake of coming off meds and just using niacin.

Niacin has no antipsychotic properties so I just ended up psychotic in the hospital.

@naturallycured had success with DEN (Daily Essential Nutrients) by Hardy Nutritionals. Bring it up with your pdoc and ask him about it.

If the adrenochrome hypothesis of schizophrenia is true, Vitamin C prevents adrenaline from oxidizing into adrenochrome, which causes the psychedelic symptoms of schizophrenia. Niacin also prevents adrenochrome buildup by preventing noradrenaline from converting to adrenaline.

I’ve recently incorporated no-flush Niacin and Vitamin C again into my regimen. I still hear a tiny bit of auditory hallucination and I want to shut it off 100%.

Of course don’t stop taking your meds in the process. You are pretty dependent on them, even if it is a low amount.

The journal is classified as a “Non-recommended Periodical”.

@everhopeful: Oh, i am sorry for that. What i am looking for is a kind of supplemental dose you can take to reduce the other meds. If i could totally go off my meds it would be great, but a little reduction would be quite as well either.

Yes, thanks. DEN and lions mane sound very promising…

@anon4362788: I sometimes have anxiety and motivation problems, too. How much do you take?

@naturallycured: DEN helped you? That sounds great, and how much? Yes, that exacly is in his book. In a newer version, i read adrenochrome itself then will be translated into adrenolutin in schizophrenic’s metabolism, whereas healthy people get it metabolised into dihydroxy… something. I can look it up another time…

I take 2000 mg. 2 capsules a day. My lions mane came from RealMushrooms on Amazon.

Daily Essential Nutrients is helping with a 150% dose, I take it like 5-5-5-6 capsules. I will drop back to 4-4-4 since I am taking Vit C/no flush niacin though.

Based on my research I believe it is healing my weak/permeable blood brain barrier, which is in turn reducing the level of chronic brain inflammation happening. There is not much Vitamin C or Niacin in it so it is isn’t antipsychotic per se, it is just facilitating healing of a damaged system which seems to cause schizophrenia.

I use a strong combination of Vitamin B: folic acid, panthothenic acid, niacin, thiamin B 1, 2 6, 12 in one pill daily…

It might help a little with the negative symptoms but i’m not sure if it’s placebo.

Amyloban hardly had any effect on my paranoia to be quite honest
And I combined it with holy basil and Ltheanine
Perhaps there is limited research in withdrawal psychosis and the efficacy of these items for them…
Tried hardy nutritionals as well for a couple months
Did not improve my paranoia
Im fact it made my dopamine sensitivity flare up
And dystonia came after me for vegence
Perhaps these are also withdrawal effects
Anyways
I am currently not taking any antipsychotics now for about one year
And all I am going through is depression and pain all over my body
Along with my autism which is my social communication and how I understand people and how other people understand me
Along with volume control and knowing when to stop talking and letting others talk…
Thanks to the lamictal I take now
My moods are a lot more stable although I still have depression
My ocd is a tad bit better from lamictal…
This is currently the only medication I am on
Ive been off of invega sustenna for about a year now…
I don’t have any bizarre delusions
And no hallucinations…
The paranoia sort of went away
I could probably use something to help it out
Im not opposed to revisiting the alternative medications listed up above…
Im actually really stoked on them!
Unfortunately due to my position in life
They weren’t as effective as I wanted them to be
I also mega dosed on vitamin c
And b
I will let you guys know how well I do in another half year -a year later
And I revisit them again.
By then my brain should have time to adapt to the change it’s now on…

I also changed my diet!
To be honest
Ketogenic diet was one of the best diets that helped with my paranoia
But only helped for short term…
I should of included tons more veggies while doing it…
I think I overate meat and because of that ,
I would continuously would get out of ketosis.
Perhaps a mixture of all of these would be effective
But it just got too strict and too much…

I love vegan and try to do raw vegan
But it was really hard since there aren’t clear boundaries
And I would eat too much vegan junk food… >.<

The thing about Vitamin C and Niacin is that they are fairly complementary supplements. Vitamin C causes insulin sensitivity, and Niacin causes insulin tolerance. Vitamin C causes an increase of TGF-Beta activation (potentially causing bone spurs,) and Niacin reduces TGF-Beta activation.

You probably shouldn’t megadose them individually, and if you’re going to supplement both you should do it within a reasonable amount.

Dr. Hoffer recommends 1 gram 3 times a day of both.

@StableOne .

I suggest you research any vitamin or supplement you take on pubmed https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/

To see if there’s any evidence behind it and schizophrenia.

Then check out webmd.com to see the side effects etc of the supplement (the quickest way is to google webmd and the supplement name).

I normally disagree with everything @naturallycured says (sorry! :joy:) and you must remember anecdotes are just that.

@bluebutterfly: Great, the only thing matters is that it does help, it does not matter why, does it?

I recently increased Vitamin C to 1g / day and am drinking green tea instead of coffee. I have trouble with niacin though, as i fear the flushes that it might cause, so i did not take it so far.

@Themoonshinemaras: Yes, i read about the ketogenic diet in perlmutters grain brain, but i dont want to change too much the same time. The less i change once, i will know it comes from exactly that change and is no coincidence… I recently started cooking with my mother, which became a more healthier diet than before.

@naturallycured: yes thanks. i started with 1g Vitamine c per day recently by myself (mainly because of covid-19-prophylaxis), but will increase the dose step by step. it would take a few weeks until i went on with 2 grams. As i read your reply, i will consult my phd, too, seems that vitamine c itself is not the only thing to take itself to balance things out.

@everhopeful thanks for the links, i will give it a try and after that i will know what works for myself… i think if it promises a better, healthier life it is worth trying it…
