CLEP Tests for college credit

I’ve taken two CLEPs and I’ve managed to pass both. This helped me for my educational goals and I wanted to share. CLEPs are exams that you can take that colleges will accept for course credit. The tests are usually $85. However, if you complete an online course and do the homework, you can file for a voucher. In this case, the test will be free.

This is ideal either for students in senior year at high school or adults returning to college. I’ve made a simplified version of the steps below. You can find far greater detail on CLEPs and how to sign up for them at Modern States and on YouTube.

1.) Find out if the college you’re applying to accepts CLEP tests for credit. Some colleges do not. Go to College Board. Use their clep-college-credit-policy-search.

2.) Register for an account at Modern States. Register for an account at College Board. Modern States has your coursework. College Board is where you’ll sign up for the test. If you wish, you can purchase a voucher from College Board at this time. You will have a six month window to use it before it expires. If you want a free voucher, you’ll have to do the homework.

3.) Go to Modern States and select course. Watch all the lectures, do required homework and reading. A green checkmark will appear once you’ve finished a module. There are sample CLEP questions at the end of the course you need to complete.

3.) File for a voucher, so the test will be free. You must do all the homework and score 75% or higher on the CLEP questions. You may go back and correct wrong responses to reach 75%. You can find the link to the voucher request on the Modern States website.

4.) Once you get your voucher, navigate to College Board. You will not pay for the test if you have a voucher. Be sure to enter the voucher number when prompted in your cart.

5.)Use the College Board ‘Find a Test Center Near You’ to register at a nearby testing center. If none are available, you will have to use remote proctoring. You will open a Proctortrack account. College Board will email you instructions on how to do this.

6.) Show up to your test, don’t be late. I usually showed up ten minutes beforehand. You’ll need a form of government ID and the fee for your testing center. Each center is different and may have different rules/fees. The fee is usually around $25. You may request a reimbursement from the testing center through Modern States, under ‘test-center-reimbursement.’

This is great for students in their senior year, and adults going back to school. I hope this helps you as much as it helped me!

I had done a CLEP exam for my bachelor degree. It was nice to save time and money.
