It was on the news here in Ireland. The parents feel they have no other option. They said the number of children with mental problems are increasing each year.
My neurobio professor told us that that (more children w mental illness every year) is because we’re creating a society that’s evolving faster than our brains. Our brains aren’t biologically changing anymore, so as curriculums try to shove in more and more material at younger and younger ages it forces their brains to work on things that it hasn’t been evolved to work on. Which leads to, you know, stress and mental disorder after trying to do something you literally weren’t built to do. (Hours of homework-no joke, my third grade brother would get 3 hours of it! Shorter recess, test obsession, etc.) It’s really messed up.
If we continue on this path, no one is going to be mentally well anymore…

There is also a spreading of awareness and a reduction in stigma. The culture is beginning to understand mental illness which means more people are getting help who previously wouldn’t.
I do agree with Anna entirely. We weren’t built for this. Just having technology in our lives, constant access to information. We don’t ever have to rest.
I’m hoping in this next decade though, through medical advances and breakthroughs in therapies that SZ isn’t something you have to live with for the rest of your life. It will always be a battle, but I think a lot of it can be overcome…
I faced a little stigma. Started telling some of my neurotypical family members about how much progress I was making, first they ignored me and then they started joking about it. Totally insensitive and ignorant to how difficult the last two years of my life have been…
So, yeah I’ve pretty much won the fight… but I guess I just have to keep it to myself…
This is a shitty thing to say, but let them get SZ let them go through what I went through and see how they’d fair.
They are my family after all, I got the genes from somewhere…
