Cheaper Medications in Europe - AstraZeneca loses German court appeal over Seroquel XR drug patent

This ruling should mean that generic versions of Seroquel XR will soon be available very inexpensively. This is good news for those looking for more cost-effective treatments.

"Britain’s AstraZeneca Plc on Tuesday lost an appeal in Germany’s Federal Court against generic drugmakers selling cheap copies of its anti-psychotic drug Seroquel XR.

In November 2012, the federal patent court in Germany ruled a key patent on Seroquel XR, the extended-release version of Seroquel, was invalid.

The British drugmaker appealed that decision in the higher Federal Court, claiming its patent on the drug for treatment of schizophrenia, bipolar disorder and depression was valid until 2017.

The German patent had been challenged by generic drugmakers Teva Pharmaceutical Industries, Novartis’s Hexal unit and Accord Healthcare Ltd.

AstraZeneca has an underground lab out here in our neck of the woods, pretty scary looking empty lot with 3rows of razer barbed wire fence and an armed guard (is that a M-16 under your belt or are you just happy to see me?) guarding an empty entry gate.
Another armed guard in combat uniform prevents you from even aproaching the gate. All that for an empty lot, c’mon.
Now that was worth googling.
