yeah so last night i was thinking, whats the point of having a tv licence and not watching tv very much
so then i thought i’ll try and cancel my tv licence which is £12.00 a month and so this morning i did just that and i also cancelled my tv subscription to sky which was £10 pm
i need to look into it with more detail but there are some things i can still do like watch youtube and maybe on demand stuff, i want to make sure its totally legal before i watch anything though just so i am not doing anything fraudulent, i want to do it legitimately.
Netflix is less than 10 dollars a month I think… hulu is also about that price…hell you could get both and still save maybe more than 2 euros a month… I don’t have the fancy euro e on my keyboard…
it seems like America is the rip off capital of the world… most the satellite/ cable providers want to do a phone/internet/tv bundle… with a contract… its 60 dollars a month for 2 years but the contract is for 5… and the last 3 years they like to ramp the price up to about 150 a month… direct tv im talking about you…
the only problem with the tv licence people is that they randomly send someone out to check and if you are found to be watching live tv or whatever then they can fine you £1000 for that, but i’ll be doing it legitimately so i dont think i’ll get into trouble,
fed up with the news, its normally all bad stuff anyway and i dont need that, i might buy a paper to keep up to date (might even use my brain a bit more) lol
so i’m doing quite good with my bills now
£20 for gas/elec combined pm
£27 council tax pm
£13 mobile phone/wifi internet pm
£8.99 for my laptop insurance pm
£50 for fuel for my car pm
idk how much i am spending al together but its ok
in the last month i have managed to save
£43.00 0n mobile/broadband charges pm
£12.00 tv license pm
£10.00 tv subscription pm
This is the first time I’ve ever heard of a TV license. I was dumbfounded. In the US you need a license to drive a motor vehicle which I always though was because they’re dangerous, but what damage is a TV gonna do? My wife said pretty soon you’ll need a license to take a piss.
UK TV license is to raise revenue for television and radio companies. I don’t begrudge paying mine as I listen to a lot of BBC radio and if the TV licence was scrapped we would have much more commercial TV and radio and less interesting content in my view. One of my buddies has stopped paying his licence though as he never watches live TV or iPlayer - only Netflix and Youtube.
Do I need a TV Licence if I only ever watch on demand services (like catch up TV), DVDs or downloaded programmes?
You don’t need a licence if you only ever watch on demand or catch up programmes on services other than BBC iPlayer (and you also never watch live TV programmes on any channel, including on iPlayer).
You also don’t need a licence to watch DVDs, Blu-rays or videos.
You need a TV Licence to download or watch BBC programmes on iPlayer – live, catch up or on demand. This applies to any device and provider you use.
We have dish satellite for cable TV, and it started out at about $89 a month, then in less than 6 months jumped up to over $120.
My ex, who pays this bill just calls them and tells them he never agreed to any increase and wants to switch companies so cancel his subscription.
Then they try to keep his business by reducing the excess charges. He’s had to do this 3 times in 4 years.
Read the fine print on the breakdown of charges on the back of one of the bills, it’s pretty entertaining.
We had a “Bundle” deal where it included voice, internet, and tv, but we didn’t have a landline phone (home phone wired to the house, i.e. connected to the wall-plugged in), so there was a subsidized charge to “cover” you not having one.
If you really want a good laugh, read the fine print on your gas and electric bill- here it’s called “PG&E” for Pacific Gas & Electric. I call it “Pretty Gross & Excessive.”
I just called my cable company and botched about the price. They were charging me $280 a month for cable/phone/internet. I got them to lower the price to $250. I think that’s still too expensive
@Csummers I heard on the news that water rates are going up in some parts of the SF Bay Area. The reason given was that so many people did a good job conserving water during the drought that revenues for the water agencies dropped to the point where they now need to recover lost revenues by raising water rates. Say whaaat?
I pay about 129 $ a month for the phone, internet and the cable. But I use a lot my TV since I often watch movies on movie channels and NHL hockey games.
this may sound weird but i just started a trial for a month on Netflix, its ok though bc i am allowed to watch it as it is not live tv, there are still things i can do without a licence, now i dont have a tv licence i want to watch something lol, so i have just started watching castlevania lol
It is a good TV day for me today. I am picking up 48 free air TV channels. Plus, since my $29 internet usage is unlimited, I can watch as much HD Netflix and HD YouTube as I want on my TV, and do so via my old Blu-ray DVD player.
Glad I dumped the Cable TV long ago.
A TV license sounds crazy. After all, the TV channels are dumping radio waves into your house without your permission, and then they say that you need a license to make use of those radio waves or else you are considered to be steeling them.
It is like someone is giving you a dollar, and then demands that you pay him ten dollars for doing so.
Good ol’ California ain’t it!
This is all to common. First there was a drought that cause the shortage of water (not really, they sell the water to other places CoughCough) so that’s why they charge so much more- but when it floods- like the 100 year flood happens every 10 years- do you think they reduce the price~ not on your life!
Our basic sewer here is over $120. a month, just to be hooked up to a city sewer line (was there really ever a choice?) and each year it goes up more and more- we’re not talking water consumption, I’m talking basic sewer hook up. They don’t do anything different each year, so why so high? Oh, they said, it’s to pay for the chemicals. What, the ones yer obviously smoking?
Our 2 month water bill is over $180., but water consumption for those 2 months averages less than $17.
PG&E say the same thing, use less energy, conserve it for the future,…hahaha, Whaaaaaaa? less revenue?
Waaaaaa cry to the CPUC (California Public Utilities Commission) and the Energy Resource Recovery Account (ERRA), to request approval to change rates for:
*Recovery of $36 Billion in costs related to the fuel needed to produce electricity as well as costs of buying energy from 3rd parties. Meaning someones got to pay to get that energy to them to charge to you, and you have to pay them to get it to you, whether or not you use it, solar people have to pay a surcharge for NOT using their electricity.
*Return of 428.4 million to eligible customers for the sale of GHG emissions allowances (including the California climate control credit for residential customers) - that one being the credit you get twice a year, applied to your current bill, usually like $25…so you have to pay them to give you your credit. Hmmmmmm.
oh there’s more, but I got a stomach just talking about it.
Do you know the difference between the government and organized crime?
Organization.
