One film I don’t recommend is “Bug” with Ashley Judd and Michael Shannon. It’s terribly depressing, brutally graphic, potentially triggering, and not, in my opinion, very accurate.

You’re right–that movie was super triggering to me. And just left me with a general nasty feeling. I’m sorry that I watched it!

Blessings,

Anthony

I found Black Swan confusing. I wasn’t aware when watching it that she was supposed to be portraying someone with a mental illness.

Some movie titles that I have been collecting on mental illnesses:
A Beautiful Mind (2001), Donni Darko (2001), Take Shelter (2011), Angel Baby (1995), Silver Linings Playbook (2012), K-Pax (2001), Girl Interrupted (1999), The Shining (1990), One flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975), Sybil (1976), Mr. Jones (1993), The Snake Pit (1948), Lilith (1964), Benny and Joon (1993), The Fisher King (1991), Shutter Island (2010), Pi (1998), The Soloist (2009), Clean, Shaven (1994), Frankie & Alice (2010), Through a Glass Darkly (1961), Black Swan (2010), As Good as It Gets (1997), Aviator (2004), The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999), The Wolf of Wall Street (2013), The Bad Seed (1956), Psycho (1960), Rain Man (1988)

Angel Baby and Clean, Shaven I would not recommend to anyone suffering. The Shining or Psycho I would not recommend if you can’t watch horror. I haven’t watched all of these.

Shine had a happy ending.
Loved Benny and Joon.

Side Effects is not about schizophrenia.

It is about depression and a medication for depression that causes side effects.

Black Swan!!!
Just a warning though- I was kinda obsessed with it for a while. It’s a pretty powerful movie.

Shutter Island starring Leonardo DiCaprio
also
Call Me Crazy, it has huge actor/actress list but the main star in the movie is Brittney Snow, and Jennifer Hudson plays an important roll.

Now that I think about it, I’m struggling to think of a single movie about schizophrenia that was any good. There are many movies about mental illness, particularly vague undiagnosed illness. The few movies I’ve seen where schizophrenia is mentioned, A Beautiful Mind for example, were poor, inaccurate, or unrealistic in my opinion.

This is going to bother me until I find one.

I have heard that Angel Baby is fairly accurate although hard to watch. Hubby and I cried a lot so could be triggering. Clean, Shaven was also hard to watch. Take Shelter may be accurate in terms of paranoia. Sybil while about DID I found it to have been nicely done same with Frankie & Alice.

When I was around twelve, my ten-year-old brother and I shared a bedroom. We had a small thirteen inch black and white tv in the room. One late night we found Sybil being broadcast. It was about the furthest thing in the world from what we’d normally watch but we were intrigued. They played it in parts over the course of two or three nights and we watched the whole thing, two little kids huddled in the dark, glued to the screen.

It was a good bonding moment for us that we remember to this day. My brother went on to become such a fan of dramas that I would refer to him as “drama boy”.

Sad to say, I haven’t seen any of the movies listed here. except “as good as it gets”

other then that… I’ve read the Shining, girl interrupted, one flew over the cuckoo’s nest, beautiful mind and a few others… But I’m sure the movies are different from the books.

I have to be very careful with movies and shows… they hit me in a bad way.

Girl Interupted is one of the best movies I ever watched. It’s not truly about schizophrenia (the main character is a borderline) but most of the action takes part in a mental hospital and I definetely recommend to watch. Beautiful movie and beautiful characters.

Another film I highly recommend is Fight Club. It’s got some raw violence in it (which I actually enjoyed in the movie) and is mostly for guys I guess but the character play is awesome. I won’t spoil you the end but the main character is definitely schyzophrenic

Take care.
