Can a schizophrenic have manias?

I believe I had a mania recently. Suddenly, I was able to work for 12 hours at a time from home for days at a time (3-4 weeks) along with feeling extremely paranoid and anxious. Those energy levels have disappeared again now.

So I’m wondering, was this mania, and do schizophrenics get these, or is it just bipolar people?

If you get mania with schizophrenia it is called schizoaffective disorder. I would explain your symptoms to your pdoc.

Ahh, okay. I have explained to my pdoc, but he didn’t think anything of it (or at least, he didn’t say anything).

I’m more interested to understand if it was mania or not. Be good to hear what others do in their mania whilst still on drugs.

Did you make any terrible impulsive decisions? We’re you able to sleep a reasonable amount? Did people around you comment on you acting more fidgety or jumpy than usual? Did you speak so quickly people had trouble following along?

I would mention this episode to your doctor, and see what they say. If it’s hypomania, they might just want to keep an eye on it. But if it was true, full blown mania, you might need a mood stabilizer.

I’ve only had one true manic episode in my life, but I get hypomanic a whole lot.

I had mania during psychosis, what I was told if there is a mood component to your schizophrenia then generally the prognosis is better. Second Generation antipsychotics are also used to treat mania and I only had mania when I was on fluonxol and not on riperidone which is what I am on now.

During my manic episode, I refused to take my meds or eat. I ran out of the house in a t shirt in the middle of a blizzard, and tried to hide from Mr. Star, who was following me. He chased me into a Goodwill, where I put on a shirt then walked out of the store. Luckily, he stayed behind to pay for it and I didn’t get arrested for shoplifting. But then he lost me and I wandered the streets for hours until I started to come down, and then I called him to pick me up.

I have schizoaffective disorder bipolar type but I don’t remember any mania but I think bipolar comes with mania supposedly.

Maybe it wasn’t mania then. I was able to sleep, was talking normally, etc. I just felt like I had my old energy back (pre-drugs) where I was able to really work through the clock for hours on end. It felt good, but I was a bit worried that I was about to go back into psychosis again. I was paranoid and anxious again as well.

I don’t have full-blown mania episodes but I have hypomanic episodes.

So yes, it could happen with sz.

i never knew what all the symptoms of mania were i feel like i am impulsive when it comes to buying things that i like, i sleep semi normally but i talk more than usual maybe just my recent med change has me not so sedated anymore, i feel like me tho it is just how regular people feel that have never been on such cns depressing meds, i know these questions arent to me i dont think i have mania maybe just not used to feeling like doing stuff other than sleeping and eating 24/7 like on my past med

Maybe you’re just starting to adjust to your medication. After 6 months to a year, they can get less sedating.

Maybe this is it, although my energy levels have dropped again now. Will need to see if it happens again, and tried to find out what caused it.

I get manic many times but I’m diagnosed with bipolar disorder.

You can also become manic with schizoaffective.

I would discuss it with your doctor.

I have had the manic portion but I think it was much more on the psychotic end of the spectrum

And I’ve had hypomanias
