Best Typical/First Generation Antipsychotic For You

I’m thinking when I see my psychiatrist on Tuesday that I’ll ask to drop the Invega and get on another 1st gen antipsychotic augmented with the haldol and caplyta.

What first generation antipsychotics have helped the most for you guys?

generic prolixin…fluphenazine works like a charm for me…no side effects…lost all my extra weight on this med. 10 mg twice a day.

I dont like first gens. I like partial dopamine agonists. THey seem to balance me out better.

Thank you, @jukebox. Do you notice any Parkinsonism symptoms from it? I have quite a bit from haldol, but overall tolerate that better than second gens.

The reason I like the first generation ones is lack of weight gain. I can tolerate everything, while it may suck at times, better with first generation antipsychotics.

I think abilify is mostly weight neutral as well.

I was on Haldol

It was quite effective

No weight gain but a very weird kind of sedation

Was not myself on that med if I even have a self left At this point

Had cogwheel rigidity

That was when I ended up on 30mg of diazepam

Took me years to get rid of that

Clopixol was the best drug for my symptoms. It really removed all the voices, strange feeling in my brain and delusions. Too bad I started shaking and I became very stiff on it. Otherwise I would be on it. It’s a great drug imo.

Abilify gained me 160 pounds in a year, but yes, ostensibly, it’s supposed to be more weight neutral. But my body reacts to second generation antipsychotics very badly.

I shake on haldol, too, and have several Parkinsonism symptoms. However, if its that or diabetes, I’m picking haldol

I took invega for fourteen miserable years. I then went to perphenazine. It was a miracle drug for a while. Basically no voices, ideas of reference and thought broadcasting tamped down. I lost some weight annd my sex drive came back. I ended up switching off it to zyprexa after two years though. Some issues were I couldn’t sleep and the dreams were horrible. Eventually I kinda lost interest or enjoyment in everything. That’s basically why I got off it. I was miserable. Zyprexa has been good to me though and I can now sleep through the night and have interest and enjoy things again.

I take Haldol too. It’s the only first generation AP I tried. Oh, and zupenthixol injection in hospital once, but it cause heart palpitations so I asked for it to be discontinued

Haldol is fine I guess, I don’t feel any different on it than not.

I was on Loxapine for 5 years. It managed my symptoms pretty well but I got TD from it. I’ve been off it 6 months and my TD has not gone away. My left hand only partially works, it’s like half paralyzed and impossible to type with.
