Things can be more interesting in a manic/psychotic state…but that’s still a limited type of intelligence.
I miss hypomania so much. Stupid mood stabilizers.
I dont honestly i like things to be calm and normal…
It’s the worst, isn’t it?? I’m offended when people call me “normal”.
I think you’re right on both points.
People who actively seek out a schizophrenia forum for support may be the higher functioning type.
I too feel less intelligent now than before. Sometimes I feel dumb. In my youth I was gifted. I came out on the newspaper as a kid because I could read, write, do mathematics and knew about dinosaurs as well astronomy. My friend’s mom kept the newspaper clipping. I was also skipped a few grades but I started crying because I wanted to be with my friends so they moved me to my former classes. On a test I scored top 5 in the country in middle school. In high school I took an IQ test and got a phenomenal score.
These days I feel much dumber than before. I used to hear people say, “He’s the smartest person I know.” Often. These days I don’t feel that way anymore.
My neuropsych testers told me that intelligence doesn’t decrease. I was the oddball gifted kid when I was little, too, and my awesome IQ remains.
I think all the pot I smoked must have shaved a few IQ points from my old score.
Haha no it didnt!
I’ll take your word for it! Makes me feel smarter already. Lol
You have a cool brother man. Thanks for sharing that mirror story.
My pdocs have never mentioned any kind of intelligence/personality tests before.
I’ve heard the same thing but I don’t think it applies to me.
My memory is the thing I find that has been most affected since I developed schizophrenia
I did this test and scored 142
Yeah, I build my own computers and computers for clients. So I guess I have learned intelligence too.
I also graduated high school as an Ontario Scholar with an A average and was accepted into the University of Toronto which is one of the countries top universities.
I can sense your intelligence from how you write. It’s very well thought and reasoned.
Thanks @Pandy You come across as intelligent too, so does @anon67051439
It’s very well thought and reasoned.
Yeah, I agree. Like I said, the studies are just on average. I certainly wouldn’t apply them to many members of this site. I’m just stating what the studies have shown. There are plenty of intelligent sz/sza on this site.
I think a combination of brain damage from the stress and trauma of psychosis, sedative meds, unhealthy diet, not exercising and loss of interest in learning new things. If you have some or most of these things it could cause a bit of a lowering of intelligence. I mean how could they not? But I’m just speculating and don’t know really.
It’s probably on a spectrum. There’s plenty of people on here who manage to have degrees or attend college. And there’s plenty of other intelligent people. I think isolation may play a part in intelligence. if you aren’t getting intellectually or mentally or emotionally stimulated with regular human contact on a regular basis such as at a job or school or an active social life your intellectual skills are going to suffer along with your mental and emotional and social skills. But it doesn’t automatically mean you’re stupid because you don’t work or go to school or have lots of friends.
I really have no idea.
It could be that there is no such thing as we for stupidity levels. Anyway I don’t think we are stupid. As a group, generally. Well, idk.
I certainly like to think that I’m not stupid. For one thing.
I have to say though I don’t see stupidity as the same thing as lack of general knowledge BTW.
Stupid people to me are just stupid people like idiotic people.
A psychologist did a lot of testing on me when I was in a type of residential psychiatric facility (more freedom than say an institution.)
My IQ at the time was 130 during first episode psychosis, but as time has gone on, just sitting here staring at the walls with little stimulation it honestly feels much lower.
I was considering trying amyloban seeing as it was spruiked a bit on here but its just sitting idle on my shelf at present. Maybe one day tho, who knows.
I mean its not just tests, what about emotional IQ?
It’s pretty much the same with social cognition as it is with nonsocial cognition, including IQ.
Even people with normal or high IQ and sz have cognitive impairments.
Define stupidity. The average person is not good at everything. A surgeon may call a cook an idiot because he can’t do what he can do but when his tummy is rumbling guess who he goes to in order to alleviate it. Almost no one is unable to accomplish something. Even if all you can do is load a truck at least you know the order things must go. Some very accomplished people would be astonished at that ability.
