I have been trying a job but i cant really tollerate working with such severe anhedonia and avolition. My therapist says most ppl she knows on ssi have at least some part time gig to pick up extra cash cuz it aint enough. I only get $765 a month disability (lowest amount) and i am able to live in my own apartment but my parents pay car insurance dental and cell phone bill. The rest of my life i pay for and rent is only $100 as of now
I think you are getting the most for SSI. If you were on SSDI you could get more depending on how long you worked. I get about $950 with SSDI. I live independently off that with no car or job.
The monthly payment amount for the SSI program is based on the “federal benefit rate” (FBR). In 2018, the FBR is $750 per month for individuals and $1,125 for couples (and the FBR increases annually if there is a Social Security cost-of-living adjustment). The FBR is the maximum federal monthly SSI payment.
You’d have to be living in a super crappy apartment to live independently off of that. I dunno sounds tough. Costs me $300-$400 just normal life costs a month minus rent. Add on rent to that and honestly I need to be making over a grand per month, preferably well over that to live independently. Decent apartments in safe areas now are like in the $800-$1000 per month range, though you can always split if you get roommates and it depends on where you live some states are cheaper.
It was fairly easy for me to get discounted housing with SSDI. I pay $252 for rent each month in a decent neighborhood.
That’s very nice yes I thought there was some deal you could get with disability. I don’t qualify for it.
You are so smart @Anna I think everyone wants you to do well.
Well we’ll see, I’m trying my best thanks
I think most of us qualify for section 8. It just takes long to get on it.
We got on HUD fast but our housedidnt qualify and it is hard to find open houses rodent that landlords will accept hud. It is Because they don’t want to have to keep the houses or apartments up to code. We have a lot of slumlords here.
So we let hud go and just reapplied. Wait I g list aagain
I’m on a 5 year waiting list for housing.
To answer your question. No way no day.
U cant afford an apartment on ur own off $750 unless u somehow have no other expenses. I’m like @TheBest said living off subsidised apartment, the county mental health board pays large chunk of rent and i only pay $100. Thank god its not $250 tho, i think if i had section 8 they would take that, that would leave me with $500 for everything else. My neighborhoods not bad, mostly immigrants, not much crime, normally they charge 1k for this apartment.
So looks like noone does live off $750, and if i wanted a gf she better have a job. I know from experience using this forum a large chunk of people dont do any kind of work. Must be living with family or in assisted living. My pdoc seemed to think i could live independently if i watched spending. But two dates with a girl would put me over spending limit as it is now. And $120 goes to camels $50 to beer. Oh well $750 in US just doesnt get u far cuz cost of living is hella high. I spent $30 dollars just to see infinity wars… smh
Even the weight list for section 8 is closed. Once you get on waitlist u wait 5-10 years. And it might not be another 5-10 years for weight list to open up so u r looking at 10-20 years. Section 8 is nice cuz u can move around and have some liberty in choosing apartment, but they charge more than i am paying.
Have u tried talking to social services where u live to see if theres some local thing to get you housing faster. I only waited a year for mine but i was homeless living in shelter then hotel
Sounds right. I’m going through the mental health program. Otherwise, I’d be like 50. I need to start planning ahead for my future.
